\n“The Prints of John L. Winters” display in the Adair
\nSkipwith Gallery is a retrospective of the artist’s graphic
\nworks from 1967 to 1997. The pieces are from his exhibit
\ndisplayed last fall at the Latvian National Museum of Art
\nin Riga, Latvia.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nA gallery reception is scheduled 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday. The
\nexhibit and reception are free and open to the public. The
\nmuseum is open 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday
\nand 1-4:30 p.m. Sunday.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAlthough a regular visitor to Latvia, his native country,
\nWinter had not had the opportunity to exhibit his work
\nthere until last year. He received the invitation because
\nof his “high level of printmaking technical mastery,” said
\nMarita Berzina, curator of works on paper at the Latvian
\nMuseum.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n” Winters hasn’t specialized in one single technique; he
\nhas chosen to use not only the traditional classical
\nmethods, but also has gone with the times and mastered new
\ntechniques such as photo etching,” Berzina said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWinters said that wanting to be able to teach students
\nvarious printmaking methods was his inspiration for
\nlearning different techniques. He has done printmaking in
\nsilkscreen, etching, woodcut and lithography.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The various techniques give life to the art in different
\nways,” he said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAlbert Sperath, museum director agreed, saying, “Winters’
\nimages touch a nerve that one has a hard time identifying.
\nMysterious, humorous and perplexing are words that come to
\nmind when I view his art.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBorn in 1935 in the Bauska district of Latvia, Winter fled
\nto Germany with his family to escape the Soviets in 1944.
\nThey immigrated to the United States in 1950.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWinters received his BFA in 1963 from the Rhode Island
\nSchool of Design and his MFA in painting from Tulane
\nUniversity in New Orleans in 1965. He furthered his studies
\nat the Instituto Allende, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, in
\n1969; the Art Students League of New York in 1978 and
\nFairview College, Peace River, Alberta, Canada, in 1993.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWinters is an honorary professor of the Latvian Academy of
\nArt. With the re-establishment of Latvia’s independence in
\n1991, he founded an annual scholarship for the best
\ncreative achievement in the graphic arts by students from
\nthe academy’s graphics department.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWinters and his wife, Maggie, reside in Oxford.
