Winters&#8221; display in the Adair<br \/>\nSkipwith Gallery is a retrospective of the artist&#8217;s graphic<br \/>\nworks from 1967 to 1997. The pieces are from his exhibit<br \/>\ndisplayed last fall at the Latvian National Museum of Art<br \/>\nin Riga, Latvia.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>A gallery reception is scheduled 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday. The<br \/>\nexhibit and reception are free and open to the public. The<br \/>\nmuseum is open 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday<br \/>\nand 1-4:30 p.m. Sunday.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Although a regular visitor to Latvia, his native country,<br \/>\nWinter had not had the opportunity to exhibit his work<br \/>\nthere until last year. He received the invitation because<br \/>\nof his &#8220;high level of printmaking technical mastery,&#8221; said<br \/>\nMarita Berzina, curator of works on paper at the Latvian<br \/>\nMuseum.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8221; Winters hasn&#8217;t specialized in one single technique; he<br \/>\nhas chosen to use not only the traditional classical<br \/>\nmethods, but also has gone with the times and mastered new<br \/>\ntechniques such as photo etching,&#8221; Berzina said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Winters said that wanting to be able to teach students<br \/>\nvarious printmaking methods was his inspiration for<br \/>\nlearning different techniques. He has done printmaking in<br \/>\nsilkscreen, etching, woodcut and lithography.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;The various techniques give life to the art in different<br \/>\nways,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Albert Sperath, museum director agreed, saying, &#8220;Winters&#8217;<br \/>\nimages touch a nerve that one has a hard time identifying.<br \/>\nMysterious, humorous and perplexing are words that come to<br \/>\nmind when I view his art.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Born in 1935 in the Bauska district of Latvia, Winter fled<br \/>\nto Germany with his family to escape the Soviets in 1944.<br \/>\nThey immigrated to the United States in 1950.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Winters received his BFA in 1963 from the Rhode Island<br \/>\nSchool of Design and his MFA in painting from Tulane<br \/>\nUniversity in New Orleans in 1965. He furthered his studies<br \/>\nat the Instituto Allende, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, in<br \/>\n1969; the Art Students League of New York in 1978 and<br \/>\nFairview College, Peace River, Alberta, Canada, in 1993.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Winters is an honorary professor of the Latvian Academy of<br \/>\nArt. With the re-establishment of Latvia&#8217;s independence in<br \/>\n1991, he founded an annual scholarship for the best<br \/>\ncreative achievement in the graphic arts by students from<br \/>\nthe academy&#8217;s graphics department.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Winters and his wife, Maggie, reside in Oxford.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;The Prints of John L.
