OXFORD, Miss. – After years of writing critically acclaimed
\nscholarly publications, University of Mississippi faculty
\nmember Ajit Sadana says his latest effort has to be his
\nproudest literary accomplishment to date.<\/span>
\n
<\/p>\n

\nThe professor of chemical engineering has co-authored the
\ntextbook “Fractal Analysis of the Binding and Dissociation
\nKinetics for Different Analytes on Biosensor Surfaces” with
\nhis eldest daughter, Neeti, a post-graduate (year three)
\nanesthesiology resident at Jackson Memorial Hospital
\nassociated with the University of Miami Miller School of
\nMedicine. The book is to be released in January 2008 by
\nElsevier, publisher of health science books and journals.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It was always a dream of mine that Neeti and I would one
\nday work together on a research project,” Sadana said. “I
\nfirst approached her with the idea two years ago. She had
\nto find the time in her busy schedule to do the writing,
\nbut eventually she got on board.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTheir resulting book is the fifth in a series that the
\nprofessor has written over more than a decade based on his
\nkinetic studies on biosensor surfaces, intended to advance
\nthe detection of diabetes mellitus, arthritis and systemic
\nlupus erythematosus.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I actually wrote the foreword to my father’s previous
\nbook,” said Dr. Neeti Sadana. “We thought that it would be
\nfun to give me an even bigger role in this one.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAutoimmune diseases such as cancer, systemic lupus
\nerythomatosus, arthritis and diabetes mellitus, and
\ncardiac-related illnesses can hopefully be alleviated and
\nbetter managed by using biosensors for early detection of
\ntheir precursors.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe authors noted that while biosensor applications in
\nhealth care are not new, very few people are involved with
\nthe kinetic aspect of their development.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSadana added that his chemical engineering approach to
\nhealth care-related biosensors has generated criticism from
\nsome in the medical profession who seem to feel that he is
\nout of his element.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This is why I wanted the introductory chapter of this
\nbook, which is general in scope, to be written by Neeti
\nbecause she is a medical doctor and has expertise in the
\nbiomedical field,” Sadana said. “Her writing sets the tone
\nfor the rest of the book, which I wrote. Although her
\nchapter opens the book and is very clear and concise, it
\nactually was the last one to be written.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDr. Sadana said she and her father enjoyed writing
\ntogether.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Most of the communication was e-mails and phone calls, but
\nI come home to Mississippi fairly frequently, so we had
\nmultiple talks at Starbucks,” she said. “It was really
\ngreat to have medical and philosophical discussions with
\nhim. He got to interact with me as a colleague and not just
\nas his kid.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Sadanas plan to follow up their debut book with a
\n1,200-page handbook, expected to be released in 2010.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This is cutting-edge stuff,” Dr. Sadana said. “Anything
\nthat can contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of
\npatients that is cost-effective and quick is beneficial to
\nthe entire health care industry.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSadana said that although he found the professional
\npartnership with his daughter personally rewarding, he
\ndoesn’t necessarily foresee it becoming a lasting union.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I don’t know whether Neeti will even warm to the idea of
\nwriting scholarly research articles on her own on a regular
\nbasis or not,” he said. “She stays so busy practicing
\nmedicine. But even if she doesn’t pursue writing as part of
\nher career path, what she has published to date will always
\nbe a nice thing to have on her resume and something for me
\nto cherish.”
