Such was the case for<br \/>\nformer Memphian Nancy Martin, who has donated a collection<br \/>\nof artifacts circa 1800s to the University of Mississippi.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The Smith Collection, including original land deeds signed<br \/>\nby two former presidents and Civil War love letters,<br \/>\nbelonged to Martin&#8217;s uncle James Warders Smith Jr. They<br \/>\nwere found at his Memphis home following his death there<br \/>\nJan. 7, 2006, at age 80.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>A Clarksdale native, Smith enjoyed an illustrious life in<br \/>\nacademia and taught for 22 years at City College of New<br \/>\nYork. Upon retirement, he moved to Memphis to be close to<br \/>\nhis sister, Mignon Smith Martin, and her family, including<br \/>\ndaughter Nancy and son George B. Martin III.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The land deeds and letters were found in poor condition,<br \/>\nsaid his niece. &#8220;This was so typical of Uncle Ward&#8217;s<br \/>\nbehavior,&#8221; she said. &#8220;He would collect and save very fine<br \/>\nand valuable books, photos, pictures, et cetera.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The Martin family had the artifacts restored, then decided<br \/>\nto donate them to UM&#8217;s J.D. Williams Library for<br \/>\nsafekeeping.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Mr. Smith was an extraordinary person whose collection<br \/>\nrepresents his varied interests,&#8221; said Jennifer Ford,<br \/>\ndirector of UM&#8217;s Department of Archives and Special<br \/>\nCollections. &#8220;These land deeds and letters are a<br \/>\nsignificant addition to our archives.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;As a seventh-generation Mississippian, Uncle Ward would<br \/>\nlike to have known that his donation would generate a love<br \/>\nfor history, including the history of one&#8217;s family,&#8221; Martin<br \/>\nsaid.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Martin describes her uncle as having had an IQ that equaled<br \/>\nEinstein&#8217;s. His achievements included graduating as<br \/>\nvaledictorian at Bobo High School, earning his bachelors<br \/>\ndegree summa cum laude from Vanderbilt University,<br \/>\ncompleting master&#8217;s and doctoral degrees, becoming fluent<br \/>\nin six languages and being awarded a Fulbright<br \/>\nscholarship.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>As a Fulbright scholar, Smith studied literature and French<br \/>\nat the University of Grenoble in France. He then did<br \/>\ngraduate work at Columbia University, followed by a<br \/>\nteaching stint at Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>While teaching at CCNY, he spent many of his 22 summers<br \/>\nwith his Memphis family. In retirement, he taught part time<br \/>\nat the University of Memphis. Smith said her uncle&#8217;s last<br \/>\nwish was granted when he was buried in Riverside Cemetery<br \/>\nin &#8220;his beloved Friars Point, Miss., the only place he ever<br \/>\ncalled &#8216;home.'&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>For more information about the J.D.
