\n OXFORD, Miss. – Seven University of Mississippi
\nphysicists have kept a keen eye on a huge
\nconstruction project in Switzerland this week.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n Researchers at the European Organization for
\nNuclear Research, known as CERN, lowered the final
\npiece of the Compact Muon Solenoid particle
\ndetector into its experimental cavern 328 feet
\nunderground on Tuesday (Jan. 22).
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe UM physics professors are among some 1,500 scientists
\nfrom 155 institutes in 36 countries working with Fermilab
\nto build the CMS, one of the experiments preparing to take
\ndata at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, scheduled to begin
\noperating this summer. UM has received funding for this
\nproject since 1991 from the U.S. Department of Energy.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n This final piece is a large disk, nearly 45 feet in
\ndiameter, with an asymmetrical cap on one face that
\nfits into the central barrel of the experiment. The
\nwhole assembly weighs about 1,430 tons. It includes
\nfragile detectors to help identify and measure the
\nenergy of particles created in LHC collisions.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “The University of Mississippi is a founding member
\nof the CMS experiment, having built fiber optical
\nsplicers and electronic cooling boxes for the CMS
\nHadron Calorimeter, which sits within the large
\nsolenoidal magnet,” said Lucien Cremaldi, a UM
\nphysics professor who has been closely involved
\nwith the installation progress at CERN. Other UM
\nprofessors in the Hadron Calorimeter group are Jim
\nReidy, Rob Kroeger, Don Summers, Breese Quinn,
\nRomulus Godang and David Sanders.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “We have been building the CMS detector for nearly
\na decade, and now we’re 99.8 percent done,” said
\nFermilab physicist Dan Green, construction project
\nmanager for U.S. CMS and chair-elect of the
\ncollaboration board. “The first collisions are just
\naround the corner.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n CMS is the first experiment of its kind to be
\nconstructed above ground and then lowered, piece by
\npiece, into a cavern below. After eight years of
\nwork in the surface hall, the lowering of this
\nfinal piece moves CMS into its final commissioning
\nstage.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n For this last large piece, scientists at the
\nUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison designed the large
\niron disks that help guide the magnetic field
\ncreated by the detector’s powerful solenoid
\nmagnet.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “From the design to the construction, we were
\ninvolved all the way,” said physicist Dick Loveless
\nof the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who watched
\nas the huge gantry crane lowered the disk. “It was
\nphenomenal to see this last piece go down.
\nEverything went down without excitement, which is
\nexactly what we want.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n American universities designed and built the
\ncathode strip chambers that are bolted onto the
\ndisks. These chambers accurately track muons, the
\nheavier versions of electrons that indicate
\ninteresting collisions. U.S. funding also
\ncontributed to the plastic scintillating layers and
\nall the electronics in the hadron calorimeter, part
\nof which is the “nose” of the disk that absorbs and
\nmeasures energies of all particles flying through
\nthe detector.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n From shedding light on dark matter to searching for
\nextra dimensions of space, experiments at the LHC
\npromise to unlock some of the deepest mysteries of
\nthe universe.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “This is a very exciting time for physics,” said
\nCMS spokesman Tejinder Virdee. “The LHC is poised
\nto take us to a new level of understanding our
\nuniverse.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
