\nOXFORD, Miss. – Faculty and staff at the University of
\nMississippi not only serve in classrooms, offices and
\nbuildings throughout the campus, but they also have
\ncontributed more than $1.4 million of their own resources
\ntoward the university’s MomentUM campaign.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nMore than 700 current faculty and staff have given or
\npledged $1.46 million since Jan. 1, 2005, according to UM
\nFoundation figures released this week.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It’s extraordinary that our employees, who give so much of
\ntheir time and effort to Ole Miss, also give back in this
\nway,” said Gloria Kellum, vice chancellor for university
\nrelations. “These gifts illustrate the deep dedication of
\nour faculty and staff and their commitment to our students
\nand their success. It is heartwarming.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe gifts are part of the MomentUM campaign, a four-year
\ninitiative to raise $200 million. The campaign, which ends
\nin December, already has raised more than $170 million for
\nscholarships, graduate fellowships, faculty support, a
\nbasketball practice facility, residential colleges and a
\nnew law school on the Oxford campus. Also in the plan is a
\ncancer center at the Medical Center in Jackson.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhile the campaign is geared toward specific initiatives,
\nfaculty and staff have given to a number of other areas of
\nneed on the Oxford campus.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nJohn O’Haver, associate professor of chemical engineering,
\nsaid he gives regularly to the School of Engineering for
\nseveral reasons:
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“First, I believe in what we are doing here, and want to do
\nwhat I can to help this university be better and better.
\nSecond, I want to be able to challenge my students upon
\ngraduation to give back. I think it is more effective if I
\ncan say, ‘Yes, I give too.’ Third, most of our students
\ncame here on significant scholarships and I would like to
\nhelp make that possible for future generations.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOthers are also giving through their estates. For example,
\nCharles Noyes, professor emeritus of English, has indicated
\nthat he will bequeath a portion of his estate to UM, and
\npharmacy Dean Barbara Wells and her husband, Richard M.
\nWells, have named the university as beneficiary of a life
\ninsurance policy to create the first endowed pharmacy
\nprofessorship.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTo help other UM employees understand how they might make
\nsimilar gifts, a series of planned-giving seminars are to
\nbe offered through the UM Office of Human Resources this
\nspring. Seminar dates will be publicized as they become
\navailable.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
