OXFORD, Miss. – Herbert E. Dewees Jr., 65,
\nexecutive director of Alumni Affairs at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi from 1990 to 2004, lost
\nhis battle with cancer early Friday (Jan. 25). He
\ndied at Sanctuary Hospice in Tupelo.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\n Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Monday at
\nFirst Presbyterian Church in Oxford, with a
\nreception immediately following in the Butler
\nAuditorium of the Triplett Alumni Center. Coleman
\nFuneral Home is handing the arrangements.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n Dewees joined UM’s Alumni Affairs staff at the
\nMedical Center in 1976, then moved to the Oxford
\ncampus a year-and-a-half later to work with various
\nalumni chapters on alumni activities and
\nfundraising. During his early tenure, chapters were
\ndeveloped for each school and college, as were
\n“order” programs to provide them with financial
\nsupport.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n While Dewees was executive director, the
\nassociation renovated its alumni center, celebrated
\nits 150th anniversary and broadcast its first
\nalumni meeting nationally live via satellite from
\nthe Oxford campus. Though the association’s
\naccomplishments were many under his leadership, the
\none of which he was most proud was its
\ninclusiveness.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n “Herb Dewees devoted most of his adult life to the
\nuniversity and our Alumni Association,” said
\nChancellor Robert Khayat. “He and his wife Dixie
\nare loved and respected by the people of Ole Miss.
\nWe extend our heartfelt sympathy to Dixie and the
\nDewees family.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n Many in the association say it was Dewees’ vision
\nand leadership that transformed the Alumni House
\ninto the Triplett Alumni Center. Completed in 1997,
\nthe $4 million renovation was paid for by
\ncontributions from Ole Miss alumni and friends.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n In recognition of his commitment to providing
\nscholarships to Ole Miss students, the Alumni
\nAssociation’s board voted in 2007 to name its
\nscholarship fund the Herbert E. Dewees Jr. Alumni
\nAssociation Lineal Descendant Scholarship
\nEndowment.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n Dewees, a Paul Harris Fellow in the Oxford Rotary
\nClub, participated in fund-raising campaigns for
\nhis church, First Presbyterian, and Oxford Medical
\nMinistries.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n A month before retiring in 2004, he received the
\nAlgernon Sydney Sullivan Award for exhibiting the
\ncharacter, humanitarian and spiritual qualities
\nevident in the life of Sullivan, a Southerner who
\nbecame a prominent 19th century lawyer, businessman
\nand philanthropist.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n Upon receiving the award, Dewees said, “I have been
\nblessed to work for a great university and with
\nwonderful people who share a love for and
\ncommitment to Ole Miss. Serving our university and
\nour alumni and friends has been most rewarding.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n Warner Alford, who succeeded Dewees as executive
\ndirector of Alumni Affairs, said that his presence
\nat UM is reflected in its academic programs,
\nfacilities and support programs.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n “It’s difficult to express the appreciation,
\nrespect and affection we have for him,” Alford
\nsaid. “In his quiet, dignified way, he made a
\nlasting impact on Ole Miss, and we are better for
\nhaving enjoyed his leadership and friendship.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n A Meridian native, Dewees received undergraduate
\n(1965) and law (1968) degrees from UM.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n He is survived by his wife, Dixie, and two sons:
\nMichael Dewees and wife Mary Alice of Big Sky, Mt.,
\nand Brad Dewees and wife Audrey of Oxford.
