OXFORD, Miss. – A plan to raise $12 million for a
\nbasketball practice facility at the University of
\nMississippi was announced today and – like the nationally
\nranked men’s team – the effort is off on a fast break.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nOfficials with the UMAA Foundation, the private fundraising
\narm for intercollegiate athletics, said more than $6
\nmillion of the total already has been donated or pledged by
\nexcited supporters.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe 46,000-square-foot facility is to include separate
\npractice courts, locker and meeting spaces, film rooms,
\nplayers’ lounges, and coaches’ offices for both the men’s
\nand women’s basketball teams. It also has shared weight
\nand training rooms. The building will be located on the
\nsouthwest side of the campus on the corner of Coliseum
\nDrive and Hill Drive, across from the Gillom Sports
\nCenter.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Games are played at Tad Smith Coliseum, but they are won
\non the practice court,” Chancellor Robert Khayat said. “Our
\nmen’s and women’s basketball teams have demonstrated their
\ncompetitiveness. This new practice facility demonstrates
\nour commitment to support them with whatever they need to
\ncontinue to be successful.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe campaign to raise private funds for the facility comes
\nat an exciting time for Ole Miss basketball. The men’s
\nteam, ranked among the Top 20 in the nation, is off to its
\nbest start in school history.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Our guys are committed to playing on the national stage
\nevery March and this building provides a huge step in our
\nability to recruit and compete,” said men’s Coach Andy
\nKennedy. “We need every Ole Miss fan to join this effort
\nand make a gift to build a practice facility for the
\nexclusive use of men’s and women’s basketball.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe women’s team last year advanced to the Elite Eight of
\nthe NCAA Tournament before losing to eventual national
\nchampion Tennessee. This year’s team with new Coach Renee
\nLadner recently upset 18th-ranked Arkansas.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“There are so many reasons why Ole Miss basketball will
\nbenefit both academically and athletically once this
\nfacility is built,” Ladner said. “We greatly appreciate the
\ngenerous support of our alumni who continue to donate funds
\nto a facility that has become a need and not just a want.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nGroundbreaking for the new building is to be held later
\nthis spring, with construction expected to take 18 months.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“The coaches have given us their reasons regarding the need
\nfor the facility,” said Athletics Director Pete Boone. “Now
\nthe burden is on us to provide them the tools they must
\nhave to be successful. To ensure a successful future, the
\nanswer is simple – come to games and donate the money to
\nbuild our practice facility.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe effort is part of the MomentUM campaign, a four-year
\ninitiative to raise $200 million. The campaign, which ends
\nin December, already has raised more than $170 million for
\nscholarships, graduate fellowships, faculty support,
\nresidential colleges and a new law school on the Oxford
\ncampus. Also in the plan is a cancer center at the Medical
\nCenter in Jackson.
