{"id":47844,"date":"2015-04-17T14:00:59","date_gmt":"2015-04-17T19:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.olemiss.edu\/?p=47844"},"modified":"2015-04-15T10:49:55","modified_gmt":"2015-04-15T15:49:55","slug":"mathematical-probability-theory-topic-springs-final-science-cafe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/mathematical-probability-theory-topic-springs-final-science-cafe\/","title":{"rendered":"Mathematical Probability Theory Topic of Spring&#8217;s Final Science Cafe"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_47846\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sandy6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47846\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-47846\" src=\"http:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sandy6-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"UM math professor Sandra Spiroff uses dice to demonstrate theories of probability.\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sandy6-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sandy6.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-47846\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UM mathematics professor Sandra Spiroff uses dice to demonstrate theories of probability.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 The theory of unique factorization, with an application to mathematical probability, is the topic for a monthly public science forum organized by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olemiss.edu\/depts\/physics_and_astronomy\/\">University of Mississippi Department of Physics and Astronomy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">The spring semester&#8217;s third and last meeting of the Oxford Science Cafe is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday (April 21) at Lusa Pastry Cafe, 2305 West Jackson Ave. Sandra Spiroff, UM associate professor of mathematics, will discuss &#8220;Unique factorization and a roll of the dice.&#8221; Admission is free.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">&#8220;Starting from the familiar factorization of integers into prime numbers, we extend the concept of unique factorization to polynomials and beyond,&#8221; Spiroff said. &#8220;In particular, we will discuss how unique factorization, or the lack of it, probably jeopardized early attempts to prove Fermat&#8217;s Last Theorem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">Spiroff&#8217;s 30-minute presentation will also present an interesting application to the probabilities associated with rolling a pair of dice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">&#8220;If time permits, we will run some experiments and play the casino game of craps,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The mathematical difficulty of the majority of this talk is high school algebra, and many examples will be given.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">Spiroff earned her doctorate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a master&#8217;s degree from Saint Louis University and a bachelor&#8217;s degree from Indiana University. Her research areas include commutative algebra, with specialization in the topics of divisor class groups and Chow groups.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in; orphans: auto; text-align: start; widows: 1; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; word-spacing: 0px;\">Undergraduate courses she teaches are linear algebra and abstract algebra.
