\nOXFORD, Miss. – An array of events are planned at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi to celebrate Black History Month,
\nthemed “Celebrating Black History Month 2008: Courage,
\nDetermination, Leadership and Legacy.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nProgramming begins Monday (Feb. 4), and the keynote address
\nis set for Feb. 13, featuring the Rev. Joseph E. Lowery,
\nwho helped lead the Montgomery bus boycott after Rosa
\nParks’ arrest in 1955.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Over the past years, we’ve had numerous speakers to
\ndeliver powerful messages for our Black History Month
\ncelebration, but none have the expertise that Rev. Lowery
\nbrings,” said Charles Ross, chair of African-American
\nstudies. “His longevity in the movement and his fight for
\ncivil rights is unparalleled. He marched side by side with
\nDr. Martin Luther King, and that direct connection and
\nrelationship should provide some valuable insight to our
\nstudents.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe opening program on Monday features author Charles Cobb,
\nfounder of the National Association of Black Journalists.
\nThe address at 2 p.m. in the Overby Center’s second floor
\nconference room opens a series of programs during the month
\nsponsored by the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and
\nPolitics. The series is titled “Breaking Black News,
\nBuilding Black Culture: The Past, Present and Future of
\nAmerica’s Black Press.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The black press was a major player during the civil rights
\nmovement,” Wilkie said. “They went places where the
\nmainstream press didn’t, and they helped galvanize the
\nblack community into action across the nation. We want to
\ntouch on their legacy, but we also want to consider their
\nmodern significance at a time when so many blacks hold
\nprominent places in the conventional press.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe series also includes the following 2 p.m. programs at
\nthe same location: Feb. 8, screening of the film “Soldiers
\nWithout Swords;” Feb. 15, discussion by UM students about
\nthe intersection of race and journalism; and Feb. 22, panel
\ndiscussion with UM alum Otis Sanford, editor of opinion and
\neditorials at the Commercial Appeal in Memphis, and Karanja
\nAjanaku, editor of the Tri-State Defender in Memphis.
\nRounding out the series at 7 p.m. Feb. 28, a panel
\ndiscussion features UM alum Ronnie Agnew, executive editor
\nof The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson; Kirk Johnson of
\nAfrican-American studies; and Bernell Tripp of the
\nUniversity of Florida, author of “Origins of the Black
\nPress.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCoinciding with Black History Month, the fifth annual
\nOxford Film Festival, Feb. 8-10, has scheduled films
\nrelated to the civil rights struggle. Those films include
\n“Testing Hope: Grade 12 in the New South Africa,”
\n“Greensboro: Closer to the Truth,” “Miss Lil’s Camp,” “The
\nDevil Came on Horseback,” “The Song of Pumpkin Brown,”
\n“Falsifyin’,” “Banished” and “The Dixie Hummingbirds: 80
\nYears Young.” Visit
