{"id":482,"date":"2008-02-06T11:32:02","date_gmt":"2008-02-06T17:32:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=482"},"modified":"2014-09-23T09:24:44","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T14:24:44","slug":"black-history-month-celebration-features-keynote-address-feb-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/black-history-month-celebration-features-keynote-address-feb-13\/","title":{"rendered":"Black History Month Celebration Features Keynote Address Feb. 13"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; An array of events are planned at the<br \/>\nUniversity of Mississippi to celebrate Black History Month,<br \/>\nthemed &#8220;Celebrating Black History Month 2008: Courage,<br \/>\nDetermination, Leadership and Legacy.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Programming begins Monday (Feb. 4), and the keynote address<br \/>\nis set for Feb. 13, featuring the Rev. Joseph E. Lowery,<br \/>\nwho helped lead the Montgomery bus boycott after Rosa<br \/>\nParks&#8217; arrest in 1955.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Over the past years, we&#8217;ve had numerous speakers to<br \/>\ndeliver powerful messages for our Black History Month<br \/>\ncelebration, but none have the expertise that Rev. Lowery<br \/>\nbrings,&#8221; said Charles Ross, chair of African-American<br \/>\nstudies. &#8220;His longevity in the movement and his fight for<br \/>\ncivil rights is unparalleled. He marched side by side with<br \/>\nDr. Martin Luther King, and that direct connection and<br \/>\nrelationship should provide some valuable insight to our<br \/>\nstudents.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The opening program on Monday features author Charles Cobb,<br \/>\nfounder of the National Association of Black Journalists.<br \/>\nThe address at 2 p.m. in the Overby Center&#8217;s second floor<br \/>\nconference room opens a series of programs during the month<br \/>\nsponsored by the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and<br \/>\nPolitics. The series is titled &#8220;Breaking Black News,<br \/>\nBuilding Black Culture: The Past, Present and Future of<br \/>\nAmerica&#8217;s Black Press.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;The black press was a major player during the civil rights<br \/>\nmovement,&#8221; Wilkie said. &#8220;They went places where the<br \/>\nmainstream press didn&#8217;t, and they helped galvanize the<br \/>\nblack community into action across the nation. We want to<br \/>\ntouch on their legacy, but we also want to consider their<br \/>\nmodern significance at a time when so many blacks hold<br \/>\nprominent places in the conventional press.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The series also includes the following 2 p.m. programs at<br \/>\nthe same location: Feb. 8, screening of the film &#8220;Soldiers<br \/>\nWithout Swords;&#8221; Feb. 15, discussion by UM students about<br \/>\nthe intersection of race and journalism; and Feb. 22, panel<br \/>\ndiscussion with UM alum Otis Sanford, editor of opinion and<br \/>\neditorials at the Commercial Appeal in Memphis, and Karanja<br \/>\nAjanaku, editor of the Tri-State Defender in Memphis.<br \/>\nRounding out the series at 7 p.m. Feb. 28, a panel<br \/>\ndiscussion features UM alum Ronnie Agnew, executive editor<br \/>\nof The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson; Kirk Johnson of<br \/>\nAfrican-American studies; and Bernell Tripp of the<br \/>\nUniversity of Florida, author of &#8220;Origins of the Black<br \/>\nPress.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Coinciding with Black History Month, the fifth annual<br \/>\nOxford Film Festival, Feb. 8-10, has scheduled films<br \/>\nrelated to the civil rights struggle.
