\nOXFORD, Miss. – As Marvin King thumbed through an
\nautographed, first-edition copy of the “Narrative of the
\nLife and Times of Frederick Douglass” published in 1846,
\nthe awareness that he was holding a revered document in
\nU.S. history gave him goose bumps.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n“This is fantastic!” said King, delicately turning the
\ntimeworn pages. “It’s awe-inspiring to be able to touch
\nsomething more than a hundred years old. Without these
\nimportant documents of the past, we wouldn’t have the
\nAmerica we have today. I hope people read these and think
\nabout their meaning.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe assistant professor of political science at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi was among the first to visit “The
\nRemnant Trust Anthenaeum,” a collection of 35 original and
\nfirst-edition works dealing with the topics of liberty and
\ndignity. Some pieces date back to 1250.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCo-sponsored by the Freedom Forum, the artifacts are on
\ndisplay at the University Museum through April 29.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDue to the large number of patrons expected, “hands-on”
\nviewing of the collection is limited to professors,
\nteachers and their students and must be scheduled by
\nappointment, said Albert Sperath, museum director. Call
\n662-915-7073 and ask for Sperath or Holly Bethune, museum
\neducator.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOther titles of note in the collection include a
\nhand-lettered copy of the Magna Carta (1350), Common Sense
\n(1776) by Thomas Paine, City of God (1494) by St.
\nAugustine, Letters Concerning the English Nation (1733) by
\nVoltaire and Minutes of the 2nd Continental Congress
\n(1778).
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAbraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation (1862),
\nBenjamin Franklin’s Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Document
\n(1787) and Thomas Jefferson’s Notes on the State of
\nVirginia (1801) are also featured.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBased in Jeffersonville, Ind., the Remnant Trust is a
\npublic educational foundation that shares its actively
\ngrowing collection with colleges, universities and other
\norganizations for use by students, faculty, scholars and
\nthe general public. Generally, titles are loaned for a
\nsemester to educational entities that choose specific
\ndisplays and book a couple of years in advance, giving
\nadequate time to plan.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“That the Trust makes this collection available is
\ncommendable in itself, but the encouragement to touch, feel
\nand read the originals is what makes this a truly unique
\nexperience,” Sperath said. “The university owes a debt of
\nthanks to the Freedom Forum for underwriting this exhibit.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Freedom Forum, based in Washington, D.C., is a
\nnonpartisan foundation dedicated to free press, free speech
\nand free spirit for all. Renamed in 1991 under the
\ndirection of Al Neuharth, the organization began in 1935.
\nNewspaper publisher Frank E. Gannett started that
\nfoundation.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I’m really delighted that the Freedom Forum was able to
\nhelp bring these really priceless documents to Ole Miss in
\nconjunction with the opening of the Center for (Southern)
\nPolitics and Journalism,” said Charles L. Overby, a UM alum
\nwho is CEO and chairman of the Freedom Forum. “Some of the
\ngreatest thinkers in history have enhanced the concept of
\nfreedom, which is often taken for granted. These documents
\nhave enhanced freedom’s evolution.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAt least two other UM staff and faculty members have seen
\nthe display.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“As a historian, I recognize this collection as a gold mine
\nof original sources,” said Charles Ross, director and
\nassociate professor of history and African-American
\nstudies. “Typically, no one would ever be allowed to touch
\nsuch dynamic artifacts, so this truly is a
\nonce-in-a-lifetime opportunity and an invaluable
\nexperience.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It’s exciting that these historic items are available to
\nbe examined up close,” said Associate Vice Chancellor for
\nUniversity Relations Jeffrey Alford. “I could actually see
\nthe bubbles in the ornate gold-inked capital letters of the
\nbeginning paragraphs in the Magna Carta. It’s a powerful
\nexperience to see something so important to human history.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMeanwhile, King remains in awe of his own encounters with
\nworks in the Remnant Trust collection.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This copy of the Magna Carta has lasted more than 700
\nyears,” he said. “Remembering I actually touched it still
\nmakes the hair on my neck stand up when I think about it.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nLocated at 5th Street and University Avenue, the museum is
\nopen 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and
\n1-4 p.m. Sundays.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
