\nOXFORD, Miss. – Fat. Stupid. Uneducated. Uncultured. If
\nthese insults were aimed at someone because of their ethnic
\nbackground, skin color or religion, a sense of outrage
\nmight not be far behind.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nHowever, in Europe, directing such barbs toward Americans
\nis not only considered OK but they’re also spoken with
\npride, said Andrei Markovits, author of “Uncouth Nation:
\nWhy Europe Dislikes America” (Princeton, 2007).
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMarkovits plans to discuss his book Feb. 6 at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi. The 7 p.m. program in the Croft
\nInstitute, Room 107, is free and open to the public as part
\nof the institute’s Spring Speaker Series.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Since 1960, I cannot recall a time like the present, when
\nsuch a vehement aversion to everything American has been
\narticulated in Europe,” Markovits writes in the book’s
\nintroduction. “No West European country is exempt from this
\nphenomenon – not a single social class, age group,
\nprofession or gender.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nContrary to popular belief, anti-Americanism has a longer
\nhistory than most people realize, dating as far back as the
\nRevolutionary War, Markovits said. Lately, that sentiment
\nseems to have been amplified by America’s dominance on the
\nworld stage.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It’s not anti-American if you think invading Iraq was
\ncompletely wrong; you can have a debate about that,”
\nMarkovits said. “Anti-Americanism is saying, ‘Of course,
\nthey got it wrong precisely because they’re all fat, dumb,
\nuncultured Americans.’ At dinner parties in London, you’re
\nsomewhat expected to have this contempt for everything
\nAmerican, and nobody blinks an eye.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAlice Cooper, associate professor of political science,
\nhelped arrange Markovits’ visit to UM. She said she expects
\nhis lecture to add much needed perspective to America’s
\nincreasing unpopularity.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It’s surprising how far back it goes,” said Cooper, who
\nfirst met Markovits while she was pursuing a graduate
\ndegree at Harvard. “Professor Markovits does a great job of
\ntracing Europe’s negative images of the U.S. through
\nhistory. Anti-Americanism is much more far-reaching than
\njust criticism of policies such as the Iraq war. It’s
\ncultural as well. People will come away from his speech
\nwith a better grasp of the complexity of anti-Americanism
\nin Europe.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMarkovits is the Karl W. Deutsch Collegiate Professor of
\nComparative Politics and German Studies in the Department
\nof Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of
\nMichigan. He received several degrees from Columbia
\nUniversity, including a Ph.D. in political science
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
