\nDr. Daniel Jones\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
OXFORD, Miss. – Dr. Daniel W. Jones, president of the
\nAmerican Heart Association, is scheduled to deliver the
\n2008 Charles W. Hartman Memorial Lecture Feb. 14 at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nJones, vice chancellor of health affairs and dean of the
\nSchool of Medicine at the UM Medical Center in Jackson,
\nplans to speak on cardiovascular issues facing the U.S. at
\n11 a.m. in the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing
\nArts. Sponsored by the School of Pharmacy, the program is
\nfree and open to the public.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“We are honored to have Dr. Jones present our 31st annual
\nCharles W. Hartman Lecture,” said Barbara G. Wells, dean of
\nthe pharmacy school. “He has focused his career on the
\ntreatment of hypertension and prevention of cardiovascular
\ndisease. He is a selfless-servant leader from whom health
\ncare students, educators and practitioners can learn
\ncritical lessons to improve the quality and length of life
\nof patients locally and worldwide.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nJones serves on the AHA Board of Directors and is a member
\nof the Council for High Blood Pressure Research. He
\nrepresents the AHA on the National Institutes of Health’s
\nNational High Blood Pressure Education Program Coordinating
\nCommittee and serves as its national spokesperson on high
\nblood pressure.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHe was in private practice in Laurel from 1978 to ’85,
\nfollowed by seven years of work as a medical missionary in
\nKorea, including service as director of the community
\nhealth department and hypertension clinic at Wallace
\nMemorial Baptist Hospital in Pusan. He joined the UM
\nMedical Center in 1992 as assistant professor of medicine
\nand director of clinical hypertension.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nJones holds a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi College
\nand medical degree from UMMC. A fellow of the American
\nCollege of Physicians, he is certified by the American
\nBoard of Internal Medicine and designated as a specialist
\nin clinical hypertension by the American Society of
\nHypertension Specialists.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe AHA is a national voluntary health agency whose mission
\nis: Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular
\ndiseases and stroke.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe Hartman Lecture was established at UM in 1973 to honor
\nthe late Charles W. Hartman, who was dean of the pharmacy
\nschool from 1961 until his death in 1970. During his
\ntenure, he organized the Research Institute of
\nPharmaceutical Sciences and the Bureau of Pharmaceutical
\nServices.
