OXFORD, Miss. – As part of the ongoing 10th anniversary
\ncelebration of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College
\nat the University of Mississippi, the keynote address at
\nspring convocation Monday (Feb. 11) focuses on the
\nprogram’s evolvement.<\/span>
\n
<\/p>\n

\nGeorge A. Everett Jr., associate professor emeritus and
\nchairman emeritus of modern languages, delivers the
\naddress at 7 p.m. in the Ford Center for the Performing
\nArts. The event is free and open to the public. Everett
\nheaded the university’s honors program from 1973 to 1996.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“As we reflect on how far we have come, Dr. Everett will
\ncharge us to be intentional about our future and to stay
\ncommitted to the fundamental principles of the honors
\ncollege,” said Douglass Sullivan-Gonzalez, honors college
\ndean. “Dr. Everett led the honors program for more than 20
\nyears, and the SMBHC stands on his success today.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHonors education at UM began as the Faulkner Scholars
\nProgram in 1953 under preceptor Doris Raymond,
\nSullivan-Gonzalez said. In 1959, the University Scholars
\nProgram was established, followed by the University Honors
\nProgram in 1983. That program evolved into the SMBHC in
\n1997 after a generous monetary donation from Jim and Sally
\nBarksdale. Barksdale most recently provided another gift in
\n2007.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nEverett’s address is expected to reflect on the honors
\nprogram’s emergence from the initial Scholars Program,
\nSullivan-Gonzalez said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDescribing progression of the program, Everett said that it
\nbegan by offering an in-depth study of a small number of
\nsubjects to a small group of students, which later expanded
\nin both the number of students and subjects. By 1973, there
\nwere about 25 students in the program, all rising
\nsophomores, according to Everett.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“After 1973, we reached out and brought in students
\ndirectly from the high schools and offered them not only
\ndepth but also breadth in studies and the ability to work
\none-on-one with faculty members both in their own fields
\nand other fields,” Everett said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHe helped the program emerge to offer students the ability
\nto take a set of core courses together and then work on an
\nindividual basis with professors.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSullivan-Gonzalez said the honors college has had
\nsignificant growth in both its focus and impact. Committed
\nleaders, alumni and faculty created and sustained the
\nhonors college from the beginning. The text, lectures and
\nsenior theses are all part of the program’s success.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We have succeeded in engaging our students in thinking of
\nthemselves as participants in the educational project and
\nin taking advantage of these four years to think and live
\ncreatively and responsibly within our community,” he said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nEverett, who as a freshman studied English under Raymond,
\nsaid he enjoyed his time as director of the program and is
\npleased with how far it has come in offering a variety of
\nopportunities to students.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“He maintained a very close relationship with his students
\nas he pressed them to be imaginative and curious and to
\nachieve,” Sullivan-Gonzalez said. “We are looking forward
\nto hearing his stories so that we might better understand
\nthe drama in which we participate as members of the SMBHC.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
