Join Dena Kay Jones, a classical pianist who specializes in
\n20th-century Spanish piano music, in concert at 8 p.m. Feb.
\n14 in Nutt Auditorium at the University of Mississippi.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe show’s coordinator Ian Hominick, associate professor of
\nmusic, said Jones is the perfect artist to perform on
\nValentine’s Day.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I know she has an affinity for Spanish music and she is a
\nwonderfully gifted pianist – very passionate about
\nmusic-making,” Hominick said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nJones has performed as a soloist and chamber musician
\nthroughout the United States and in Spain, Mexico and
\nCanada. Solo performances include recitals at El Centro
\nMunicipal de Las Artes in Juarez, Mexico, the
\nKitchener-Waterloo Chamber Music Concert Series (Canada)
\nand the For the Love of Music Series in Bisbee (Arizona).
\nShe has also performed for world-renowned pianists Emanuel
\nAx and Peter Serkin at the 1998 Tanglewood Auditions in New
\nYork, Leon Fleisher at the 1999 Aspen Summer Music Festival
\nand Russell Shermann at the 2000 Summer Courses in
\nSantander, Spain.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nBesides maintaining a widely varied repertoire of standard
\npiano literature, Jones has focused her energies in
\nperformance and research on the Spanish piano repertoire.
\nIn particular, her interest led her to focus on
\nlesser-known Spanish piano works written from 1900 to 1950.
\nHer recitals feature the colorful works of composers such
\nas Manuel de Falla, Ernesto Halffter, Isaac Alb\u00e9niz,
\nFederico Mompou and Xavier Montsalvage.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nRecently Jones was awarded a grant from the Spanish Embassy
\nin conjunction with U.S. universities for a Spanish music
\nrecording project. Picked up by the classical recording
\nlabel Centaur Records, her debut album, “Luces y Sombras
\n(Lights and Shadow): Select Piano Works by Joaquin
\nRodrigo,” was released on CD in October 2007.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nA native of the central Illinois, Jones received both
\nbachelor’s and master’s of music degrees in piano
\nperformance from the University of Illinois. In August
\n2001, she completed the Doctor of Musical Arts program at
\nthe University of Arizona in Tucson. In 2002, she joined
\nthe music faculty of the University of Texas at El Paso.
