OXFORD, Miss. – On its name alone, it’s not hard to figure
\nout which academic fields are emphasized at the Jordan
\nUniversity of Science and Technology. But thanks to a
\nburgeoning relationship with the University of Mississippi,
\nthe Middle Eastern school is seeking to broaden the scope
\nof its offerings.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nLeaders from JUST met with Ole Miss officials Tuesday in
\nOxford to sign an agreement that creates exchange
\nopportunities for faculty, students and researchers.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0“The most important thing about an agreement like this is
\nthat it puts our two institutions together to exchange
\nexperiences,” said Wajih M. Owais, president of JUST. “Both
\nour university and UM can benefit culturally,
\nscientifically and in other ways. I’m really proud to have
\nthis agreement signed and we hope this will open many doors
\nfor cooperation between the two universities.”
\n<\/span>
\nThe agreement provides a framework for the two institutions
\nto work together, said Michael Metcalf, UM associate
\nprovost for international affairs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“Now we’re going to drill down into the details,” Metcalf
\nsaid. “Over the coming months and years, we’ll work
\ntogether to develop the specifics of the relationship.
\nWe’re really thrilled about the prospects.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe agreement is the latest development in an ongoing
\nrelationship with the Middle Eastern nation, a relationship
\nestablished in 2006 when His Majesty King Abdullah II of
\nJordan spoke on the Oxford campus.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

Last June, UM was the only American university to
\nparticipate in the Joint Engineering Science and Technology
\nConference, a four-day event in Amman. Two representatives
\nfrom JUST, located near Irbid, Jordan, visited UM after the
\nconference, said Kai-Fong Lee, dean of the UM engineering
\nschool.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n“During that visit, they talked to a number of people and
\nfound that we are the right university to establish this
\nrelationship with,” Lee said. “The School of Engineering
\nalready has a number of graduate students from JUST, and
\nwe’d really like for them to send us more. Our faculty
\nwould also like to collaborate with their faculty in
\nresearch, particularly in the areas of water resources,
\nnano-engineering and wireless communications.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHowever, as thrilled as Owais is with the scientific
\naspects of the partnership, he said he is equally excited
\nabout the opportunities for cultural exchange through
\nJUST’s Civil Society Development Center. Along with two of
\nhis top aides, Owais met with Bob Haws, chair of the newly
\nformed Department of Public Policy Leadership, to discuss
\nexchange possibilities.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThose options include UM sending professors to teach
\nelective courses that aren’t offered at JUST. The addition
\nof humanities courses, such as history, music and
\nphilosophy, will help round out the education JUST offers,
\nOwais said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are really opening the way for our students to speak
\nout and give their points of view,” Owais said. “Our
\nstudents like to hear speakers from outside our campus and
\nnation. So we’d like to have lectures with speakers sharing
\ntheir experiences, and students can share their ideas.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe partnership also offers unique learning opportunities
\nfor UM faculty and students, Haws said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The fact that Dr. Owais, as president of JUST, came here
\npersonally and is committed to such an arrangement is very
\npromising,” Haws said. “If we have a shot at taking faculty
\nand students to a part of the world where foreign policy
\nwill be so critical in the coming years, it’s a tremendous
\nopportunity for our students.<\/span><\/p>\n
