OXFORD, Miss. – An impressive onstage presence earned
\nUniversity of Mississippi senior Mary Brandon Norman the
\ntitle of Miss University 2008 Wednesday evening at the Ford
\nCenter for Performing Arts.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\n“I am so honored to be chosen as Miss University,” Norman
\nsaid. Besides winning the crown, Norman also won the
\nswimsuit category, which earned her a total of more than
\n$2,000 in scholarships.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nNorman, a pharmacy major from Sumrall, is the daughter of
\nBanks and Patrice Norman. She is active in the campus
\nchapter of the American Pharmacists Association, Delta
\nGamma and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nJennifer Taylor, director of campus programming, said it
\nwas exciting to work with Miss University. “A lot of hard
\nwork goes into the pageant, and I know that (Mary Brandon)
\nwill do a phenomenal job representing Ole Miss,” Taylor
\nsaid.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nAs Miss University, Norman plans to promote her platform:
\nBrightening the Future through Mentoring.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“It’s important for our younger children to have positive
\ninfluences,” Norman said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nNorman competed with eight other contestants in the
\ncategories of swimsuit, interview, talent and evening
\ngown.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nKimberley Perry of Tupelo, a biochemistry and English
\nmajor, was chosen first alternate and received a $1,000
\nscholarship. Her parents are Les and Faye Perry.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nKatherine Barkett of Brandon, a sophomore marketing
\ncommunications major, was named second alternate. She also
\nwon the talent category and received $850 in scholarships.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nPageant competition is not new to Norman, as she has
\npreviously held the title of Miss Hattiesburg and competed
\nin the 2007 Miss Mississippi pageant.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nShe will compete in the Miss Mississippi pageant again on
\nJune 28 in Vicksburg. “I’m really excited to return to Miss
\nMississippi,” Norman said. “It is a great honor and I hope
\nthat I can represent Ole Miss well.”
