OXFORD, Miss. – Joseph Howard Meredith, 39, son of James
\nMeredith, who integrated the University of Mississippi in
\n1962, lost his battle with lupus Friday (Feb. 8). He died
\nat the Laredo Medical Center in Laredo, Texas.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nFuneral services are set for 11 a.m. Feb. 16 at the Farish
\nStreet Baptist Church, 619 North Farish St., in Jackson.
\nCollins Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nMeredith was an assistant professor of finance in the
\nCollege of Business Administration, Division of
\nInternational Banking and Finance Studies at Texas A&M
\nInternational University in Laredo.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHe received a doctorate from the University of Mississippi
\nin business administration in 2002, earning the Outstanding
\nDoctoral Student Achievement Award. His doctoral
\ndissertation, “Corporate Use of Derivatives to Hedge Energy
\nPrice Risk” was the basis of original research that he
\npresented to the Eastern Finance Association.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Our hearts go out to the Meredith family,” said Gloria
\nKellum, UM vice chancellor for university relations. “We
\noften speak of the spirit that binds our graduates in the
\nOle Miss family. The Meredith family, James and Joseph,
\nwill forever be linked to this university.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nFaculty members remembered Meredith as a talented student
\nand researcher. Robert Edmister, former UM professor of
\nfinance and banking, was Meredith’s doctoral adviser when
\nhe earned his Ph.D. “Joseph Meredith did a very fine job in
\nconducting research,” said Edmister, now on the faculty at
\nBowling Green State University. “This is a grave loss to
\nhave an up-and-coming researcher passing. I’ll never forget
\nthe heartwarming honor of hooding Joseph with his proud
\nfather James seated in the audience at Ole Miss.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nMeredith earned a bachelor’s degree in economics at Harvard
\nUniversity and an MBA at Millsaps College, then worked in
\nportfolio management for Deposit Guaranty National Bank and
\nas an oil and gas industry analyst for Morgan Keegan & Co.
\nbefore earning his doctorate at Ole Miss.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nMeredith’s father was the first black student admitted to
\nUM in 1962. Joseph Meredith maintained a low profile
\nduring his studies. Many of his classmates remained unaware
\nof his relationship to the man who broke the color barrier
\nat the university 40 years earlier.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHe is survived by his father, his stepmother Judy Alsobrook
\nMeredith, his daughter Jasmine Victoria, brothers James and
\nJohn Meredith, sister Jessica Meredith Knight and
\nstepbrother Kip Naylor. He was preceded in death by his
\nmother Mary June Wiggins Meredith.
