\nOXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi School of
\nPharmacy honors three graduates this weekend for their
\ncareer accomplishments and professional service.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nBurnis Breland of Columbus, Ga., Sam Daniel of Orange Park,
\nFla., and Gene Hoover of Deerfield, Ill. are to be named
\n2008 Distinguished Alumni of the Year during Pharmacy
\nAlumni Weekend activities Saturday (Feb. 9) in Oxford.
\nSelection is based on professional achievements and service
\nto the pharmacy school, including its students, faculty,
\nstaff and alumni.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“These three individuals have served their alma mater,
\ntheir profession and their communities in extraordinary
\nways,” said pharmacy Dean Barbara G. Wells. “They are
\nexemplary role models for their colleagues and for those
\nwho follow them into the profession. We are extremely proud
\nof their accomplishments, and we are inspired by their
\nvision and selfless service.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBreland is director of pharmacy for the Columbus Regional
\nHealthcare System and affiliate clinical professor of
\npharmacy practice at Auburn University. He received his
\nbachelor’s in pharmacy in 1974 and master’s in hospital
\npharmacy in ’76, both from UM, and his doctor of pharmacy
\nfrom the University of Tennessee. He worked at the UM
\nMedical Center in Jackson from 1979 to ’84 before joining
\nColumbus Regional.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDuring his career, Breland has been active with the
\nAmerican Society for Health-System Pharmacists. He has
\nserved as chairman of the ASHP Practice Management Group,
\nmember and chair of the Council of Professional Affairs and
\nmember of the Council on Administrative Affairs.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn 1991, he was recognized as a fellow of ASHP. The Georgia
\nSociety of Health-System Pharmacists recognized him as
\nPharmacist of the Year in 1990 and again in 2002, making
\nhim the only person to receive the award twice. He received
\nthe 2005 Innovative Pharmacy Practice award from the
\nGeorgia Pharmacy Association and received the ASHP Best
\nPractices Award in 2002. In 2006, he was the recipient of
\nthe John W. Webb Lecture Award from ASHP and Northeastern
\nUniversity.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA native of McComb, Daniel is regional segment manager for
\nAmgen’s Senior Care department. He received his bachelor’s
\ndegree in pharmacy in 1972 and served as president of the
\nPharmacy Student Body. He is a recipient of the
\nWyeth-Ayerst Bowl of Hygeia, Syntex Preceptor of the Year
\nAward and member of the School of Pharmacy Hall of Fame.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDaniel has served as a preceptor for the pharmacy school
\nand is a member of the Florida Pharmacists Association and
\nthe American Society of Consultant Pharmacists. He has been
\na member of the dean’s advisory boards for pharmacy schools
\nat the University of Texas, Texas Tech University,
\nUniversity of Florida, Nova Southeastern University and UM.
\nHe also has served as a trustee on the Florida Pharmacy
\nFoundation and the Mississippi Pharmacists Association
\nFoundation. He is also a former president of the UM Pike
\nCounty Alumni Association and the Pharmacy Alumni Chapter.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHoover is divisional director of pharmacy operations for
\nthe Midwest Division of Walgreens. In his position, he
\noversees the pharmacy operations of nine states and more
\nthan 700 stores. He received his bachelor’s degree in
\npharmacy in 1985 and serves on the Dean’s Advisory
\nCommittee for the pharmacy school. He has more than 34
\nyears of experience in pharmacy, 23 with Walgreens. While
\nat Walgreens, Hoover helped open the company’s Jackson
\nmarket and has served as the key contact to the UM pharmacy
\nschool during the last five years for the company. He also
\ncoordinated Walgreens relief effort in Mississippi during
\nthe Hurricane Katrina aftermath.
