UM photo by Nathan Latil.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; Jackson businessman Ashby Foote III<br \/>\ndiscussed how to thrive in a technology-driven economy at<br \/>\nthe University of Mississippi Thursday.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Foote founded Vector Money Management in 1988 and manages<br \/>\nportfolios for individuals, foundations and institutions.<br \/>\nAs part of the Otho Smith lecture series, Foote gave an<br \/>\noverview of the history of technology and offered key<br \/>\nlessons and paradigm shifts.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;I think this is the most relevant to the technology-driven<br \/>\neconomy,&#8221; he said of Peter Drucker&#8217;s philosophy of not<br \/>\nsolving problems but instead pursuing opportunities.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The exponential growth of technology and rapid<br \/>\ntechnological changes have all affected the way businesses<br \/>\noperate, Foote said. &#8220;As you go out into business, it&#8217;s not<br \/>\nfor the faint of heart or those who want to work from 9 to<br \/>\n5, and it helps to have a healthy dose of paranoia along<br \/>\nthe way,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>MBA student Donal Parker said he has learned several<br \/>\nprinciples Foote discussed, including Moore&#8217;s Law, in his<br \/>\nstrategic management class.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;He gave you a bird&#8217;s eye view of technology from his<br \/>\nstandpoint,&#8221; said the Kennett, Mo., native.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Foote received a B.S. degree from the United States<br \/>\nMilitary Academy at West Point and served as an artillery<br \/>\nofficer in the U.S. Army until 1980. He then worked as a<br \/>\nretail broker with McLarty and Duddleston in Jackson before<br \/>\nbecoming a trust officer at Sunburst Bank. He is a member<br \/>\nof the board of directors of the Mississippi Technology<br \/>\nAlliance and the Institute of Technology Development.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The Otho Smith Lecture Series, initiated in 1981 through a<br \/>\ngrant from the Phil B. Hardin Foundation, brings prominent<br \/>\nbusiness executives to the UM campus as guest speakers.
