\nOXFORD, Miss. – Nominations are open until March 1 for the
\ncampuswide outstanding teacher of the year award at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nFaculty, staff, students and alumni are welcome to submit
\nletters of nomination for the 2008 Elsie M. Hood
\nOutstanding Teacher Award. All assistant, associate and
\nfull-time professors may be nominated with the exception of
\nprevious winners.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“A teacher’s greatest reward may be earning the respect and
\nadmiration of his or her students,” said Chancellor Robert
\nKhayat. “Many of our faculty deserve such awards every day
\nin the classroom. To be chosen to receive the Elsie M. Hood
\nOutstanding Teacher of the Year Award is a high and coveted
\nhonor on our campus. We encourage nominations to help us
\nidentify those most deserving.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nNomination letters should be limited to two pages, citing
\nspecific examples of the nominee’s teaching excellence and
\nother reasons for his or her being worthy of the honor.
\nMail letters to the Chancellor, 123 Lyceum, University of
\nMississippi, University, MS 38677.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWinner of the prestigious award is to be announced on April
\n3 at the Honors Day Convocation and presented with a
\npersonal plaque and monetary award. A plaque listing all
\nprevious Elsie M. Hood awardees is displayed in the J.D.
\nWilliams Library.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBand Director David Willson won the 2007 Elsie M. Hood
\nAward. Willson said that receiving the award was both
\nflattering and humbling.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Seeing students achieve their goals motivates me,” he
\nsaid. “I’m humbled and grateful that I have had an
\nopportunity to teach such wonderful students. They’ve
\ntaught me much more than I’ve taught them.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe outstanding teacher award has been a tradition at Ole
\nMiss since 1966. In 1988, Mr. and Mrs. Warren A. Hood Sr.
\nof Jackson made a gift to the university to endow the
\naward, and it was named in her honor. In 2000, the couple
\nmade another gift to support the award so that it continues
\nin perpetuity.
