UM photo by Nathan Latil.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; Dennis Pickens Jr. may not have always<br \/>\nembraced politics, but after taking an honors political<br \/>\nscience class at the University of Mississippi, he became a<br \/>\nfan. And now, his enthusiasm has garnered him an internship<br \/>\nat the Institute for Responsible Citizenship.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Pickens, a sophomore accountancy major in the Sally<br \/>\nMcDonnell Barksdale Honors College, plans to spend this<br \/>\nsummer in Washington, D.C., where he will hold an<br \/>\ninternship and take rigorous courses at Georgetown<br \/>\nUniversity. The program focuses on public service, and 24<br \/>\nof the most promising black male college sophomores in the<br \/>\ncountry are selected to participate each year.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>This is the first time an Ole Miss student has been chosen<br \/>\nfor the program.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Pickens, a Newton High School graduate and the son of<br \/>\nDennis Pickens Sr. and Ethel Pickens., said he previously<br \/>\nhad a pessimistic outlook on politics until Kenneth<br \/>\nTownsend&#8217;s class sparked his interest.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;I wasn&#8217;t into politics until I took his class and it made<br \/>\nme view Washington in a new light,&#8221; Pickens said. &#8220;He<br \/>\nshowed me that politics can be a medium for change.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The news that he had been chosen for the internship came at<br \/>\na bittersweet time for Pickens, as he found out the day<br \/>\nafter his grandfather died. &#8220;I was thrilled to receive the<br \/>\nnews,&#8221; he said. &#8220;William Keyes, the president of the<br \/>\norganization, called me and told me I was one of the seven<br \/>\nchosen by early decision.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Townsend, a Barksdale Fellow and instructor in public<br \/>\npolicy leadership in the Honors College, said Pickens has<br \/>\nbeen an absolute delight to teach and is an extremely hard<br \/>\nworker.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Not only has Dennis maintained a 4.0 while taking<br \/>\ndifficult honors courses, but for the last two summers, he<br \/>\nhas also participated in prestigious programs with Merrill<br \/>\nLynch and the London School of Economics,&#8221; Townsend said.<br \/>\n&#8220;Being chosen for the Institute for Responsible Citizenship<br \/>\nrepresents another well-earned milestone for Dennis. I<br \/>\nbelieve it is important for our campus community to<br \/>\nunderstand how big of a deal this program is.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>While at Georgetown, Pickens will take courses in<br \/>\ngovernment and economics designed to provide skills<br \/>\nnecessary to critically analyze the world&#8217;s problems while<br \/>\nadhering to a deep respect for civil liberties. When not in<br \/>\nclass or at work, the students are called upon to attend<br \/>\nfunctions designed to help them network within their<br \/>\nfield.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The institute creates a pathway for the top black males in<br \/>\nthe country both in and out of the classroom, Pickens said.<br \/>\nHe is most excited about being able to meet two legends:<br \/>\nGeorgia congressman and civil rights activist John Lewis<br \/>\nand U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;I also hope to meet Barack Obama, but we&#8217;ll have to see<br \/>\nwhat his schedule is like,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The opportunity to<br \/>\nmeet people like that is invaluable.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>He said he hopes to strengthen his personal characteristics<br \/>\nand get to know people who can help him achieve his goals.<br \/>\n&#8220;I think the program will make me well-rounded socially,<br \/>\nacademically and as a leader,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I&#8217;ll be meeting<br \/>\nleaders from the civil rights movement, from politics and<br \/>\nfrom corporate America and I think they will increase my<br \/>\nbreadth of knowledge of America as a whole.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>For more information, visit<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.honors.olemiss.edu\/\"><br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.honors.olemiss.edu<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Dennis Pickens.
