\nOXFORD, Miss. – Martin Jernigan, senior director of
\nbusiness development and new product commercialization at
\nNovo Nordisk in Princeton, N.J., has been recognized as the
\nAlumnus of the Year by the University of Mississippi
\nDepartment of Pharmacy Administration.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nMartin was honored during School of Pharmacy Alumni Weekend
\nFeb. 8-9. He received his master’s degree in 1989 and
\ndoctorate in 1991, both from UM. His bachelor’s degree is
\nfrom Auburn University. Selection is based on contributions
\nto pharmacy or the pharmaceutical industry.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Martin has significantly influenced the pharmaceutical
\nindustry as one of the pioneers for incorporating marketing
\nresearch into the early stages of new product development,”
\nsaid Dewey D. Garner, interim chair of pharmacy
\nadministration. “He refined his vision for pharmacy
\npractice as a graduate student at Ole Miss while acquiring
\nthe research skills necessary to impact the profession of
\npharmacy.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAt Novo Nordisk, Jernigan is responsible for leading the
\nidentification, development, negotiation and implementation
\nof breakthrough business development opportunities that
\nenable the firm to become the U.S. leader in diabetes care
\nand biopharmaceuticals. He collaborates with brand
\nleadership teams to ensure alignment and to ensure that
\nactions are taken to achieve short- and long-term
\nprofitability goals, including pipeline products. He also
\noversees the five-year strategic planning process of the
\nU.S. commercial operation unit.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBefore joining Nova Nordisk in 2006, Jernigan was executive
\ndirector for new business development with Ortho Biotech.
\nHe was responsible for identifying, evaluating and
\nexecuting business development strategies and delivering
\nbusiness deals. From 1991 to 2004, he worked at Aventis
\nPharmaceuticals as a senior director, deputy head of new
\nproducts commercialization for global marketing and
\nmedical. He was a research associate from 1990 to ’92 in
\nthe Pharmaceutical Marketing Research Program in UM’s
\nResearch Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
