<\/p>\n

\nThat’s what eight University of Mississippi School of
\nEngineering faculty members and their spouses discovered
\nwhen they visited Kennedy Space Center and attended the
\nlaunch of the space shuttle Atlantis, mission STS-122, last
\nweek.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Ole Miss representatives were among the invited guests
\nof alumnus William W. “Bill” Parsons, director of NASA’s
\nKennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Fla. After a
\ntwo-month delay, the shuttle blasted into orbit Thursday
\n(Feb. 7) with Europe’s contribution to the international
\nspace station, a $2 billion space lab named Columbus.
\nFollowing successful launch of the space shuttle, the group
\ngot a comprehensive tour of NASA facilities.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Both the launch of the Atlantis on Thursday and the
\nspecial tour on Friday were spectacular and awesome,” said
\nKai Fong Lee, UM engineering dean. “Both were educational
\nand we learned more about the challenges and importance of
\nthe space program along the way. We all pray for the
\nsuccess of Atlantis and its safe return.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBesides Lee and his wife, Alice, others from the university
\nincluded Alexander Cheng, chair of civil engineering, and
\nhis wife, Daisy; Conrad Cunningham, chair of computer and
\ninformation science, and his wife, Diana; Allen Glisson,
\nchair of electrical engineering, and his wife, Elise; James
\nVaughan, Frederick A.P. Barnard Distinguished Professor of
\nMechanical Engineering, and his wife, Kathy; Sam Shui-Yi
\nWang, Frederick A.P. Barnard Distinguished Professor of
\nMechanical Engineering, and his wife, Jine; and Robert
\nWoolsey, director of the Mississippi Mineral Resources
\nInstitute, and his wife, Maxine, education outreach
\nspecialist for the engineering school.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nParsons, a 1979 engineering graduate and member of the UM
\nEngineering Advisory Board, suggested to Lee that he bring
\na group from the university to KSC after he was named
\ndirector last January. Originally, the launch was to have
\noccurred last summer, but was rescheduled to December.
\nUnforeseen complications prohibited that launch until this
\nmonth.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I am just so glad that the Ole Miss group was able to make
\nthe trip, and we were able to launch Atlantis while they
\nwere here,” said Parsons via an e-mail to Lee. “When I am
\nable to show people that appreciate what NASA does and what
\nI am passionate about, it is my pleasure.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nLee said that the group also enjoyed seeing the space
\nstation processing facility, orbiter processing facility,
\nvehicle assembly building, mobile launcher platform and
\nperimeter of the launch pad. He added that he expects that
\nthe group will share the excitement they experienced about
\nthe space program with present and future Ole Miss
\nengineering students.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Atlantis and its seven-member crew safely roared away from
\nthe seaside launch pad after overcoming fuel gauge
\nproblems that thwarted back-to-back launch attempts in
\nDecember. All week, bad weather had threatened to delay
\nthe flight, but rain and thunderstorms remained off to the
\nwest.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTwenty-three years in the making, Columbus is the European
\nSpace Agency’s primary contribution to the space station.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
