\nOXFORD, Miss. – With National History Day Competition
\nscheduled this weekend at the University of Mississippi,
\nJoseph Ward wants to make it clear to teenage history buffs
\neverywhere that it is OK to love history.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n“An event like this can signal to high school students that
\nthey really can pursue their love of history in depth in a
\nuniversity setting like ours,” said Ward, chair of the UM
\nDepartment of History. “Our faculty, grad students and
\nundergrads will be there to really encourage students to do
\njust that.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe competition is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday (Feb.
\n16) in Conner and Holman halls. The public is invited to
\nattend at no charge.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSome 100 students are expected to attend the event, most of
\nthem juniors and seniors, said Greg Earnest, academic
\ncompetitions coordinator in the Division of Outreach and
\nContinuing Education. Although most participants are from
\nnorth Mississippi, students from as far away as the Gulf
\nCoast will travel to the competition.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nContestants must complete a 100-question history exam,
\nwhich includes American history, geography, Mississippi
\nhistory, world history and government. Every participating
\nstudent must take this exam regardless of other areas in
\nwhich the student may choose to compete, including a
\ngame-show style brain bowl, video presentation, research
\npaper, display\/poster competition and computer project.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The brain bowl part is a lot of fun,” said Michael
\nNamorato, professor of history who launched the event about
\nfour years ago. “And some of the displays are really
\nimpressive. One year, students built replicas of the
\nColosseum and the Pantheon in Rome. The work that went into
\nit was really impressive.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe first-place winner among seniors will receive a
\nscholarship toward six credit hours, while second- and
\nthird-place winners will receive scholarships for three
\ncredit hours. The scholarships may be used for an
\nintersession or a summer term at UM. High scoring
\nnon-seniors on the history exam will receive a $750
\nscholarship for first place, $500 for second and $250 for
\nthird to be used for the Summer College for High School
\nStudents program or the Summer Academy program this
\nsummer.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“But participation in such a competition is its own
\nreward,” Ward added. “All of the students who will
\nparticipate in this event deserve recognition for their
\nefforts.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nNamorato said the event affords him and others the chance
\nto talk with students about majoring in history, and
\nrelated career prospects.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Most of the time, high school students ask me, ‘What am I
\ngoing to do with a history degree?'” Namorato said. “There
\nare a lot of areas open to history graduates in business,
\ngovernment and so on. A history degree shows you have the
\ndiscipline to do research and an understanding of how
\nthings progress over time.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe competition is sponsored by the Office of High School
\nAcademic Competitions and Special Events, the departments
\nof history and classics, and the Center for the Study of
\nSouthern Culture.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This is part of our effort at the university to reach
\nout,” Ward said. “We really enjoy doing anything that
\nconnects back to younger students because they’re the
\nfuture.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
