\nUniversity of Mississippi helped inspire a successful
\nsinger\/songwriter who returns to Oxford for two
\nperformances Feb. 28.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\npre-eminent storyteller of the Gothic South, is slated to
\nperform at Thacker Mountain Radio at Off Square Books at
\n5:30 p.m., followed by a show at Proud Larry’s (211 South
\nLamar Blvd.) at 8 p.m. A co-founder of the radio show,
\nHerring is touring in support of her new album “Lantana,”
\ndue out March 4.

\nNew Artist at both the 2002 SXSW Austin Music Awards and
\nthe Austin American Statesman. She soon released the
\nfollow-up album “Wellspring.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\nfeatures all original songs, except for two traditional
\nballads, and is in many ways an artistic rebirth for
\nHerring. Her songs represent the experiences of women who
\nhave not only faced the challenges of a childhood in the
\nrural South but also the complex experiences of adult
\nwomen.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\nHer thesis topic “The Association of Southern Women for the
\nPrevention of Lynching” comes through in the song “Fair and
\nTender Ladies,” about Montie Greer.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\nwork said: “Mississippi’s dense history and the shackles of
\nits past are vividly present in Herring’s songs. Characters
\ncome of age knowing something’s not in tune with their soul
\nor conscience, but they can no more figure out where their
\nown vices of race, class, gender, religion and politics
\ncame from than they can comprehend the roots of bigotry,
\nsocial disdain or codes that keep women from realizing
\ntheir potential.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\nOxford, I love the Southern studies program in particular,
\nand when I make my first $100 million, Drs. Abadie, Wilson
\nand Ownby know that I plan to dedicate a significant
\nportion to Southern studies student communal housing,”
\nHerring said.
