\nOXFORD, Miss – Historic lynchings are the subject of a
\ndiscussion by a respected historian Tuesday (Feb. 19) at
\nthe University of Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nEdwin T. Arnold, professor of English at Appalachian State
\nUniversity, plans to present the program “The Torture
\nDeaths of Henry Smith and Sam Hose and the Creation of the
\nModern Lynching Narrative” at 8 p.m. in the Ford Center
\nRehearsal Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“My talk will be on the idea of spectacle lynching, a
\nphenomenon that developed in the late 19th century and
\ncontinued into the first decades of the 20th,” Arnold said.
\n“Spectacle lynchings were a public event, often advertised
\nin local papers or later by radio, and crowds in the
\nhundreds or even thousands sometimes gathered to witness
\nthe torture and execution of the victims.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nArnold said he plans to discuss the executions of Henry
\nSmith in Paris, Texas, in 1893 and Sam Hose in Newnan, Ga.,
\nin 1899, two of the earliest spectacle lynchings, both
\ninvolving mutilation and public burning.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Hose lynching is the subject of Arnold’s new book,
\n“What Virtue There is in Fire: Sam Hose, Southern Justice,
\nand the Making of a Black Martyr.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“What I plan to do is describe the concept of spectacle
\nlynching and then examine both the Smith and Hose cases to
\nillustrate the development of communal rituals,” he said.
\nThe event is sponsored by the University Lecture Series and
\nthe departments of English, history and Southern studies.
\nIt is part of the university’s celebration of Black History
\nMonth.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Professor Arnold is a noted and widely published scholar
\non Southern literature and culture,” said Jay Watson, UM
\nprofessor of English. “In this lecture, which is based on
\nhis forthcoming book, he explores a pair of notorious
\nturn-of-the-century spectacle lynchings.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOne lynching occurred in a small Georgia community where
\nArnold spent his childhood a few generations later. “He
\nalso focuses on the attempts of local individuals and
\ngroups to find reconciliation and healing in the aftermath
\nof the lynchings,” added Watson.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nArnold received his bachelor’s degree from the University
\nof Georgia, master’s from Georgia State University and
\nPh.D. from the University of South Carolina.
