\nOXFORD, Miss. – As national political dialogue intensifies
\nleading up to the November presidential election, the Sarah
\nIsom Center for Women and Gender Studies at the University
\nof Mississippi has scheduled a workshop to discuss federal
\nbudget priorities.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nBobbie Wrenn Banks, a member of the Women’s Action for New
\nDirections, is to facilitate the program “Women In Charge
\nof the Money” from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. March 1 in Bryant
\nHall, Room 209. It is free and open to the public, with
\nlunch provided for those who request reservations at
\n662-915-5916 by Feb. 22.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The program is not an endorsement of any political party
\nbut an effort to stimulate awareness and discussion about
\nthe federal government’s budget priorities,” said Mary
\nCarruth, Isom Center director.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWAND is a national women’s organization, which according to
\nits Web site, http:\/\/www.wand.org\/, “empowers women to take
\npolitical action, to change our culture and our national
\npriorities: toward peace and real security, away from
\nmilitarism and violence.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBanks is scheduled to visit eight states and participate in
\nthree national conferences the first half of this year.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The Great American Pie Campaign offers a new way to look
\nat our country,” Banks said. “If we spend all our money on
\nthe Pentagon, is it any wonder we find ourselves at war? We
\nwill use this new, vital lens to approach the upcoming
\nelections. We will assess candidates and thus serve
\nAmerican democracy at a potentially transformative time in
\nour history.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe workshop is scheduled for the first day of Women’s
\nHistory Month and is part of the Isom Center’s annual
\nGender Studies Conference. It is also held as part of the
\nuniversity’s programming leading up to the first of the
\npresidential debates, set for Sept. 26 at UM.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe center plans to schedule other events, which will be
\nlisted on its Web site,
