\nOXFORD, Miss. – University of Mississippi alumnus C.
\nPatrick “Pat” Massey of Birmingham, Ala., has honored the
\nmemory of his mentor Roger Q. Scott with a gift of $25,000
\nto fund an Ole Miss First scholarship in Scott’s name.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nGrowing up in Pensacola, Fla., Massey lived across the
\nstreet from the Scott family and he said it was Scott who
\nrecruited him to play football at Ole Miss.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I’ve always been grateful for what Mr. Scott did and have
\nalways been really proud of Ole Miss,” Massey said. “I’ve
\ntalked about doing something for him for years. Now that
\nI’ve retired, I had the opportunity do something in Mr.
\nScott’s name.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Roger Q. Scott Sr. Ole Miss First Scholarship is to be
\nawarded to full-time freshmen who are residents of
\nPensacola, Fla., and are graduates of Pensacola High
\nSchool. Selection will be based on merit and need.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are so grateful for this most generous gift from Pat
\nMassey and his wife, Jean,” said Jill Waycaster West,
\ndevelopment officer for the Ole Miss First Scholarship
\nprogram. “I think it’s wonderful they saw this scholarship
\nas a way to both give back to the university and honor the
\nmemory of a special and influential person.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I remember when Pat went to Ole Miss, Dad was so proud of
\nhim,” said Nancy Faye Scott, the youngest daughter of Roger
\nQ. Scott. “My father loved to help people and I am honored
\nPat gave this scholarship in his name. “My dad would be so
\nproud. He did love Ole Miss.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nScott, a veteran of WWI, was born in the Lee County
\ncommunity of Birmingham, near Tupelo. He attended UM and
\nplayed football in the early 1920s. He and his wife, Lucy,
\nmoved from Baldwyn to Pensacola in 1938 when he took a job
\nas an electrical engineer and manager of retail operations
\nwith Gulf Power Co.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHe become a respected member of the Pensacola community,
\nwas active in the Lions Club and played an important role
\nin youth recreation. He was a member of the Pensacola
\nRecreation Board for 20 years, serving as its chairman for
\nmany of those years. He also served as president of the
\nPensacola Sports Association. According to a 1964 article
\nthat ran in the Pensacola Journal, Scott was considered to
\nbe “a leader in laying the foundation for and expanding the
\nexcellent recreation program that is conducted by the city
\nof Pensacola.” Before Scott died in 1964, a new athletic
\ncomplex in the community was named for him.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nScott’s son William “Bill” Scott also attended Ole Miss and
\nplayed baseball for the Rebels for three years in the early
\n1950s.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Mr. Scott was head of the youth rec program in Pensacola
\nand he got me a summer job there,” Massey said. “I was the
\nsoftball score keeper and I would umpire for baseball
\ngames, that sort of thing. We had a good time.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nEven though Scott lived most of his adult life in Florida,
\nhe never forgot his Mississippi roots. When he saw an
\nopportunity to help Massey and other boys in his
\nneighborhood, including Frank Crum (who went on to play
\nfootball with Massey) and Billy Renfro (who played
\nbasketball), attend Ole Miss, he jumped. He wrote a letter
\nto legendary Ole Miss football coach Johnny Vaught,
\nrecommending Massey for the team.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Mr. Scott went to Ole Miss and wanted to help other
\nstudents go there, too,” said Clay Massey, Pat’s son. “My
\ndad thought that letter was instrumental in his going to
\nOle Miss.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMassey was awarded a full athletic scholarship and came to
\nOxford in 1948. He started at defensive halfback his
\nsophomore year and was chosen president of the M Club. He
\ngraduated in 1953 with a degree in business
\nadministration.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAfter graduating, Massey worked for 25 years at Compass
\nBank in Birmingham, serving as a loan officer and branch
\nmanager. He is active in his community, serving as
\npresident of the Eastwood Kiwanis club. He and Jean are
\nmembers of Mountain Brook Baptist Church, where Pat is a
\ndeacon and where both have held various leadership
\npositions.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAnd now, just as Scott helped him, Massey hopes this
\nscholarship will make it possible for more deserving
\nstudents to attend Ole Miss.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe gift is part of the university’s MomentUM campaign, a
\nfour-year initiative to raise $200 million. The campaign,
\nwhich ends in December 2008, already has raised more than
\n$180 million for scholarships, graduate fellowships,
\nfaculty support, a basketball practice facility,
\nresidential colleges and a new law school on the Oxford
\ncampus. Also in the plan is a cancer center at the UM
\nMedical Center in Jackson.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn the Ole Miss First flexible giving model, donors give
\n$25,000 to assist one student for four years and are
\nencouraged to be a part of the leadership\/mentorship
\ninitiative with the scholarship recipient throughout his or
\nher tenure at Ole Miss.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
