\nOXFORD, Miss. – Radio? It’s dead. Television? It’s limping.
\nNewspapers? They barely have a heartbeat.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThat’s just some of the hype and buzz surrounding the
\nstatus of traditional news media; however, according to
\nmany in the know, all three are thriving. In fact, radio,
\ntelevision and newspapers are incorporating new technology,
\nincluding the Internet and digital information, to provide
\nmore and better access to news, information and
\nentertainment for a time-pressed society.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe timely topic takes top billing for discussion at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi Feb. 21-23 when the S. Gale
\nDenley Student Media Center and Department of Journalism
\nwelcome more than 300 college students, faculty and
\nprofessionals for the Southeast Journalism Conference
\nthemed “Your Journalism Future in the Digital Information
\nAge.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe conference focuses on providing models that make
\ntraditional media work better with ever-changing
\ntechnology, said Traci Mitchell, associate director of the
\nmedia center. The agenda includes a keynote address,
\nhands-on learning sessions, student competition, workshops
\nand a career roundtable.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The goal of the conference is to encourage student
\nparticipation in journalism through competition and
\neducation,” said Mitchell, co-president and
\nsecretary\/treasurer of SEJC.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nEncouraging and developing student participation in the
\nfuture of journalism is important at the university,
\nMitchell said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We believe in the goals of SEJC and that’s why we’ve been
\nvery active in the organization since it was chartered,”
\nshe said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe brainchild of University of Alabama journalism
\nprofessor David Sloan, SEJC was chartered in 1986 to
\nencourage greater interest in student journalism and to
\ncreate closer ties among journalism schools in the
\nSoutheast. The conference has more than 40 active schools
\nfrom its member states.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Having the conference at Ole Miss is a good opportunity
\nfor students to see what we do here,” Mitchell said. “It’s
\ngoing to be a busy few days, but we’re looking forward to
\nhaving everyone here in Oxford.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe conference kicks off at 5 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 21) at
\nthe Oxford Downtown Inns and Suites with registration and a
\nmeet-and-greet opportunity for faculty and students.
\nRegistration continues at 8 a.m. Friday at the Oxford
\nConference Center, followed at 9 a.m. with workshops and
\ndiscussions on freelancing, media law, terrorism, the media
\nand media careers. Saturday’s schedule includes a business
\nmeeting, student sessions, job\/career roundtable and an
\nawards ceremony.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nStudent competition is a big part of the conference, said
\nRalph Braseth, media center director and professor of
\njournalism.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSince its beginning, SEJC has offered an on-site
\npublications contest for students, who can compete in
\nseveral categories of newspaper and magazine writing, copy
\nediting, layout, photography, media law, media ethics,
\npublic relations, and radio and television anchoring and
\nwriting. Competition judges include Ole Miss faculty and
\nlocal media professionals.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Flagship universities like Ole Miss, Mississippi State
\nand the University of Alabama are often able to provide
\nconference and professional experiences for their students,
\nbut a vast majority of the smaller schools in the SEJC can
\nonly attend this conference, so the learning opportunities
\nand competition offered become even more important,” said
\nBraseth, co-president of the conference. “SEJC is about
\nproviding learning opportunities for students who would not
\notherwise get them, and if providing opportunities for
\nstudents is not what we’re about, then I quit.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAlso on the agenda, conferees are to be treated to a tour
\nof historic Oxford and Ole Miss on the famed Double Decker
\nbus.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
