\nOXFORD, Miss. – Noted journalist Rudy Paulk Abramson, 70,
\nan alumnus of the University of Mississippi and member of
\nUM’s journalism advisory board, died Wednesday at a
\nhospital in Fairfax, Va. He had sustained massive head
\ninjuries in a fall Tuesday at him home in Reston, Va.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n“The university – and especially the Department of
\nJournalism – have lost a true friend in the untimely death
\nof Rudy Abramson,” said Samir Husni, chair of journalism.
\n“It’s a sad day for the journalism department and for the
\nuniversity family. Rudy was a member of our advisory board
\nand was here visiting only two months ago. He was energetic
\nabout his projects and full of hope for the future of our
\njournalism program. We extend our condolences to his
\nfamily.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA former longtime reporter for the Los Angeles Times,
\nAbramson wrote two books, “Spanning the Century: The Life
\nof W. Averell Harriman, 1891-1986” (1992) and “Hallowed
\nGround: Preserving America’s Heritage” (1996). He co-edited
\nthe “Encyclopedia of Appalachia” (2006), the first
\ncomprehensive reference work on the region that covers 13
\nstates from Mississippi to New York.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAbramson was born in Florence, Ala. He graduated from Ole
\nMiss in 1958 and was hired as a reporter for the Nashville
\nTennessean, where he worked for several years before
\njoining the Times.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAt the time of his death, he was working on a biography of
\nHarry Caudill, a Kentucky lawyer and environmentalist whose
\n1963 book “Night Comes to the Cumberlands” focused national
\nattention on the underdevelopment of Appalachia.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAbramson is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughters Kristin
\nand Karin; and three grandchildren.
