\nOXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi School of
\nEducation is teaming with the university’s Division of
\nOutreach and Continuing Education to offer a one-year
\ntraining program in play therapy.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe sessions, designed for professionals in counseling,
\neducation and social work, provide the training necessary
\nto become a Registered Play Therapist. Play therapy, which
\nallows children to work through experiences and issues
\nusing toys, has been gaining momentum in schools as a way
\nto treat the mental and emotional issues that some children
\nface.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Play therapy is a method of counseling children which
\nutilizes toys as words and play as experience,” said
\nMarilyn S. Snow, UM associate professor in leadership and
\ncounselor education and executive director of the Oxford
\nPlay Therapy Training Institute.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Children often become intimidated when questioned by
\nadults because they cannot fully understand and communicate
\ntheir emotions,” adds Jenny Rayner, clinical director at
\nthe Oxford Play Therapy Training Institute “Play therapists
\noffer a nonthreatening atmosphere in which children can
\nexpress their emotions in the playroom through toys.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe training workshops begin March 8 and run through
\nDecember. They include 10 Saturday sessions, providing 8.5
\ncontact hours per Saturday and an opportunity to enroll at
\nUM for a one-week intensive course in Advanced Play
\nTherapy, which provides 67.5 contact hours. Professionals
\ncompleting the entire year of workshops, including the
\nAdvanced Play Therapy course, will get 152.5 contact
\nhours.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nContinuing Education Credits are approved for social
\nworkers, professional counselors and educators through UM.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWorkshops meet on the fourth floor of the UM Student Union.
\nEach workshop costs $175 for professionals and $75 for
\ncollege or university students.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
