{"id":52238,"date":"2015-08-25T13:31:32","date_gmt":"2015-08-25T18:31:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.olemiss.edu\/?p=52238"},"modified":"2015-08-25T13:36:40","modified_gmt":"2015-08-25T18:36:40","slug":"overby-center-announces-fall-lineup-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/overby-center-announces-fall-lineup-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Overby Center Announces Fall Lineup of Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"left\">\n<p>OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 The Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics at the University of Mississippi will begin its ninth year of\u00a0programming by marking the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina with a discussion among university\u00a0faculty members who contributed to the coverage of the disaster that swept through New Orleans and the\u00a0Mississippi Gulf Coast.<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia Joyce, an assistant professor of journalism who edited a new book, &#8220;Please Forward: How\u00a0Blogging Reconnected New Orleans After Katrina,&#8221; will serve as moderator for the program at 2:30 p.m.\u00a0Tuesday (Sept. 1) in the Overby Center Auditorium. It\u00a0is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Joyce will be joined by associate journalism professor Nancy Dupont, a Gulf Coast native and\u00a0longtime broadcast journalist who recently led a student trip to assess the stricken region; assistant\u00a0journalism professor Alysia Steele, who was a photo editor at the Dallas Morning News when its team\u00a0won a Pulitzer Prize for their photographic coverage; and Joe York, a documentary producer at Ole Miss\u00a0whose recent film, &#8220;Room 10,&#8221; traces 10 students who were enrolled in third grade at a New Orleans\u00a0elementary school when the hurricane struck.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fall lineup of programs offers special insights into the practice of journalism and politics,&#8221;\u00a0said Charles Overby, chairman of the center. &#8220;Epic events and careers that helped shape history will be\u00a0examined and discussed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the fall schedule includes:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 5:30 p.m. Sept. 9, &#8220;Eyes on Mississippi&#8221; \u2013 The amazing career of Bill Minor,\u00a0who started as a newspaper reporter in Mississippi in 1947 and continues to write provocative columns about\u00a0the state, is celebrated in a documentary produced by Ellen Ann Fentress. After the film, Fentress\u00a0and several of Minor&#8217;s friends and associates will consider how his work had major impact in the state\u00a0and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 3 p.m. Sept. 25, &#8220;The Last Season&#8221; \u2013 On the eve of a home game against\u00a0Vanderbilt, multifaceted Mississippi native Stuart Stevens \u2013 political consultant, travel writer and sports\u00a0enthusiast \u2013 talks of his new book and how he journeyed with his 95-year-old father to nearly every Ole\u00a0Miss football game in 2013 to recapture the magic of their game day pilgrimages when he was a child.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 5 p.m. Sept. 30, &#8220;Riot&#8221; \u2013 Ed Meek&#8217;s photographic record of the shattering of\u00a0segregation in Mississippi and the turmoil at Ole Miss surrounding James Meredith&#8217;s admission to the\u00a0school in 1962 has been preserved in a new book. With a slide show, Meek and others will recall the\u00a0events on the 53rd anniversary of the night the campus became a bloody battleground.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 2 p.m. Oct. 7, &#8220;Aaron Henry&#8221; \u2013 One of the major figures in the civil rights\u00a0movement, Aaron Henry, a Clarksdale pharmacist, longtime president of the state NAACP and driving\u00a0force behind the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and Freedom Summer, is the subject of a new\u00a0biography by Minion K.C. Morrison, who will be here to talk about Henry&#8217;s life and legacy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 2:30 p.m. Oct. 8, &#8220;Dueling Propositions&#8221; \u2013 A month before the hottest political\u00a0issue of the year is decided at the polls, Jackson constitutional law specialist Luther Munford, an advocate\u00a0of Proposition 42 that is designed to force the Legislature to fully fund the Mississippi Adequate\u00a0Education Program, will debate with state House speaker pro tempore Greg Snowden, a supporter of an\u00a0alternative measure that would not carry as strong a mandate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 2 p.m. Oct. 14, &#8220;Senator James Eastland&#8221; \u2013 Maarten Zwiers, a 2007 Ole\u00a0Miss graduate from the Netherlands, grew so interested in his study of the South that he wrote the first full-length biography of the man who dominated politics in the state for a\u00a0generation. Zwiers returns to campus to describe how Eastland was a power to be reckoned with in\u00a0Washington, too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 4 p.m. Oct. 23, \u2013 &#8220;America&#8217;s Great Storm&#8221; \u2013 Former Gov.
