OXFORD, Miss. – For the second consecutive year, the Public
\nRelations Association of Mississippi has awarded its $1,000
\nscholarship to a University of Mississippi student.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nLori Simpson, a senior journalism major from the Desoto
\nCounty community of Ingrams Mill, was chosen for the award
\nover four other students who were nominated from around the
\nstate.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nOne student from each university or college in the state
\noffering a public relations course can be nominated for the
\naward. Selection is based on letters of recommendation from
\nfaculty members, academic excellence, involvement in campus
\nactivities, community service and “articulation of future
\ngoals,” said Leia Hill, member at large on the state PRAM
\nboard. Robin Street, UM instructor in journalism and public
\nrelations and co-founder of the Oxford PRAM chapter,
\nnominated Simpson for the scholarship.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I nominated Lori because she is an outstanding public
\nrelations student,” Street said. “Her work for class was
\nalways superior. I knew Lori could easily win it. I am so
\nproud of her because I knew how good she was, but now every
\nPR person in the state will also know.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nSimpson plans to accept the scholarship at the state PRAM
\nconference, scheduled April 17-18 in Hattiesburg. T
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nhe award also includes a recognition plaque, as well as a
\ncomplimentary registration fee, lodging and lunch for two
\nduring the conference.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I’m really excited,” Simpson said. “I can always use
\nscholarship money and it is definitely an amazing
\nopportunity. It was good news.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nSimpson is a student representative for the local PRAM
\nchapter. She is interning this semester in the UM Office of
\nMedia and Public Relations and for Mississippi Blood
\nServices. Last summer, she interned at LiveNation in Kansas
\nCity, Kansas, doing sponsorship and marketing work. As part
\nof Simpson’s senior thesis for the Sally McDonnell
\nBarksdale Honors College, she is planning a benefit concert
\nfor Mississippi Blood Services.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nPRAM established its scholarship in 2007 “to help support
\nPR students for their educations,” Hill said. The first
\nscholarship was awarded to former UM journalism student
\nGenie Alice Via, who now works in public relations for the
\nNorth Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, according to
\nStreet.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Lori and Genie Alice are both shining examples of the
\nhighest quality students our journalism and PR classes
\nproduce,” Street said. “The profession of PR requires
\nmultiple skills, but the most important one is writing and
\nboth these students are excellent writers.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nSimpson said she realized she wanted to pursue a career in
\npublic relations last semester after hearing a guest
\nspeaker in her advanced PR class.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I always really enjoyed it (PR) and felt like it was what
\nI was going to do, but that was like my light bulb moment,”
\nshe said.
