\nOXFORD, Miss. – A reading conference for elementary school
\nadministrators and teachers Monday (March 3) at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi is to address issues related to
\ninstructing diverse learners in reading.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe inaugural “Reaching Our Diverse Learners” conference,
\ncoordinated by the university’s Center for Excellence in
\nLiteracy Instruction, “is designed to assist teachers and
\nadministrators in providing research-based instructional
\nstrategies to help students learn to read more
\neffectively,” said Angela Rutherford, CELI director and
\nassistant professor of elementary education.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This is the first conference sponsored by the new center,
\nand it’s the only reading conference of its type in north
\nMississippi,” Rutherford said. “We hope to address issues
\nrelated to instructing diverse learners as these learners
\nnegotiate the tasks of learning to read and reading to
\nlearn.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe conference is limited to 100 attendees and the fee is

\nRobert Cooter Jr., distinguished professor of urban
\nliteracy research at the University of Memphis, delivers
\nthe keynote address at 9 a.m. His research focus pertains
\nto research-based reading instruction for children living
\nin poverty.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are pleased to have Dr. Cooter at Ole Miss,” said Tom
\nBurnham, dean of the School of Education. “I am impressed
\nwith his comprehensive view for improving school literacy
\nprograms because he clearly defines the principal’s role as
\ninstructional leader in the improvement process.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCooter is co-editor of “The Reading Teacher,” the largest
\nliteracy education journal in the world. He founded the
\naward-winning Memphis Literacy Academy, an outreach program
\nin Memphis City Schools dedicated to raising the expertise
\nof hundreds of inner-city teachers of reading. He is author
\nof the best-selling “Teaching Children to Read: The Teacher
\nMakes the Difference,” an evidence-based reading text used
\nat more than 200 universities.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe conference also includes a luncheon featuring an
\naddress by Claiborne Barksdale, CEO of the Barksdale
\nReading Institute in Oxford, and presentation of the CELI
\nChildren’s Literature Award to children’s author Laurie
\nParker of Starkville. The institute was endowed by Jim and
\nSally Barksdale in 2000 to work with Mississippi public
\nschools to improve the reading skills of students in
\npre-kindergarten through third grade.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAfternoon conference sessions are to address assessment,
\ncomprehension, early literacy, vocabulary and literature.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe goals of CELI are focused in four broad areas while
\nconcentrating on literacy development in rural, low
\nsocioeconomic areas. These goals include pre-service and
\nin-service teacher development, community outreach, service
\nto school districts and scholarly research. Established in
\n2007, CELI is funded through a Robert M. Hearin Foundation
\ngrant.
