OXFORD, Miss. – The Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender
\nStudies at the University of Mississippi kicks off Women’s
\nHistory Month this weekend with the eighth annual Isom
\nStudent Gender Conference.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nNext up is a guest speaker Monday (March 3) to recognize
\nInternational Women’s Day. Programing concludes with the
\nPorter L. Fortune Jr. History Symposium March 19-20.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nGender Conference programs, all held in the Tupelo Room of
\nBarnard Observatory, are scheduled 2:30-8:30 p.m. Friday
\n(Feb. 29) and 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday. Friday’s closing
\nsession, “Interlude: An Evening of Creative Writing,”
\nbegins at 6:30 p.m. and features presentations by master’s
\nof fine arts candidates in the English department. The
\noriginal works by the students are judged and awards are to
\nbe presented.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nConference programing includes six sessions Saturday. A
\nhighlight is a 12:30 p.m. workshop focusing on steering
\nfederal government funding toward human and environmental
\nneeds. It features Bobbie Wrenn Banks, member of the
\nNational Organization for Women’s Action for New
\nDirections, and includes lunch.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe conference is co-sponsored by the College of Liberal
\nArts and all events are free and open to the public. For a

\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nShifra Armon, associate professor and graduate coordinator
\nfor Spanish at the University of Florida, is the speaker at
\n6 p.m. Monday in Bondurant Hall, Room 204C. Her address,
\n“Don Quijote and the Construction of the Imperial Subject,”
\nfocuses on the changing role of men in leading the Spanish
\nempire 1516-1655. It is scheduled to recognize
\nInternational Women’s Day, which is March 8.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nArmon’s lecture is co-sponsored by the departments of
\nmodern languages and history, Croft Institute for
\nInternational Studies, University Lecture Series, Sally
\nMcDonnell Barksdale Honors College and Office of
\nInternational Programs.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe Porter L Fortune Jr. History Symposium is co-planned by
\nhistory professors and gender studies affiliates Sheila
\nSkemp and Elizabeth Payne.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“So impressed was the Isom Center with the symposium’s
\nplenary lecturers that we decided to adopt all 10 of them
\nas our 2008 Women’s History Month speakers,” said Mary
\nCarruth, director of the Isom Center. “Among these stellar
\nhistorians is Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, the 300th Anniversary
\nUniversity Professor at Harvard. Her March 19 presentation,
\ntitled ‘A Quilt Unlike Any Other: Rediscovering the Work of
\nHarriett Powers,’ will truly honor the spirit of Women’s
\nHistory Month.”
