\nOXFORD, Miss. – Hundreds of middle and high school students
\nfrom across the state flock to Oxford this weekend to enjoy
\nthe classics.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe Junior Classical League State Convention begins Friday
\n(Feb. 29) on the University of Mississippi campus, where
\nstudents can indulge in their love for Latin, mythology,
\nclassics-inspired art and mini-Olympic competitions. The
\nconference opens at 6:30 p.m. in the Ole Miss Student Union
\nwith registration and opening speakers. It continues
\nSaturday with a full day of activities.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I believe times most remembered from school are those when
\nyou left school,” said Anne Steel, a Latin teacher at
\nOxford Middle School. “The three main benefits for students
\ncompeting in the Junior Classical League are that they get
\nto leave school for a day, they are working with people not
\nwithin the school but in the real world, and students get a
\nchance to see that other people are interested in the same
\nthings they are.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThis is the second time UM has hosted the convention. The
\nfirst was in 2003, said Aileen Ajootian, associate
\nprofessor and acting chair of the Department of Classics.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe convention is a huge success, allowing students to
\ncompete against each other about what they know best.
\nAlthough there are no scholarships available, students
\nbenefit from the classics competition, Ajootian said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nParticipants are not graded in front of judges and many of
\nthe competitions are low-key and informal, Steel said. The
\nquiz bowl is probably the most stressful because it
\ninvolves thinking quickly to answer questions as a team
\nover a broad range of classics knowledge. Yet there’s ample
\nopportunity for fun, she said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“One year we had a javelin throw,” Steel said. “Of course,
\nwe didn’t have real javelins, but students made their own
\nout of gum and straws to see who could throw it the
\nfarthest. It was silly, but the students really enjoyed
\nit.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBesides the competitions, students also attend readings of
\nthe classics during their time in Oxford. Professors from
\nthe classics department perform the readings from some of
\ntheir favorite and most famous classical works for
\ncompetition visitors on the first night. Lectures presented
\nby assistant professors of classics Jonathan Fenno and
\nEdward Gutting focus on the Greek alphabet and the concept
\nof the barbarian in the ancient Mediterranean,
\nrespectively.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nStudents really get to move beyond the classroom and be a
\npart of a large community of people who share similar
\ninterests, Steel said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAnother goal Steel has for her students is to help them
\nunderstand that the classics are connected to the real
\nworld, whether it be a mythological character or
\narchitecture, so as they get older they can pick up on such
\nreferences.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThis way, students get excited about learning and they will
\nhave a broad range of classics knowledge when they venture
\ninto the real world, she said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I really try to encourage students to participate in as
\nmany competitions as they can,” Steel said. “If they do
\nbadly, nobody knows. If they do well, everyone knows.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
