OXFORD, Miss. – Students at the University of Mississippi
\nand other college campuses should not hesitate to call the
\npolice if they suspect another student or faculty member
\ncould commit a violent act, says a UM criminal justice
\nprofessor who has written extensively on the subject of
\nschool safety.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nIn light of recent shootings at campuses in Illinois and
\nArkansas, Chester Quarles said students have a collective
\nresponsibility to act and diffuse potentially violent
\nsituations.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“A lot of times people hear comments like, ‘I’m going to
\nkill that son of a gun,’ or ‘I’m going to lose my
\nscholarship because that stupid professor is going to flunk
\nme,'” Quarles said. “It’s easy to go into denial when you
\nhear those comments and think that person would never
\nactually act on their words. But that is exactly when we
\nneed to give a lot of credit to the threat and to try to
\ndiffuse the situation.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nUM administrators and law enforcement officials have
\ndeveloped a broad alert system that will notify students,
\nfaculty and staff of dangerous situations on campus,
\nQuarles said. As far as policy, the university is doing all
\nit can do, he said. The rest of the responsibility falls to
\nthe people who are out in the classrooms and on campus each
\nday.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nMore than 8,800 UM students and faculty have signed up for
\na system that will send a text message in the event of an
\nemergency, said David Drewrey, director of the
\nTelecommunications Center. The text message system, which
\nwas chosen after testing the capabilities of several
\nvendors, is up and running and administrators used it for
\nthe first time several weeks ago when tornadoes came
\nthrough Lafayette County.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“It was a good first test of the system, and we were able
\nto work out a few things,” Drewrey said. “It assured us
\nthat we could reach people in the event of an on-campus
\nemergency.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nDrewrey added he would like to see more people sign up for
\nthe system but is encouraged by the enrollment so far.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nQuarles encourages students, faculty and staff to report
\nanyone carrying a gun on campus to the University Police
\nDepartment because the officers are trained to
\nappropriately investigate and deal with potentially violent
\nsituations.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“The investigation itself demonstrates that we are serious
\nabout safety and are going to do all we can to protect the
\nuniversity,” he said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHe added that the university is uniquely equipped to deal
\nwith these situations because of the numerous counseling
\nand help organizations on campus.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I think we are doing all we can,” he said. “We just need
\nto continue to take threats seriously and act responsibly.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nQuarles has studied and written extensively on school
\nviolence, including the books “Staying Safe at School: What
\nYou Need to Know” (Corwin Press) for teachers and
\nadministrators, “Staying Safe at School” (Broadman and
\nHolman) for students, and “School Violence: A Survival
\nGuide for School Staff With Emphasis on Robbery, Rape, and
\nHostage Taking” for the National Education Association.
