OXFORD, Miss. – Shifra Armon, associate professor and
\ngraduate coordinator for Spanish at the University of
\nFlorida, discusses how “Don Quixote” reflects the changing
\nrole of men in leading the Spanish empire from 1516 to 1655
\nin a Monday (March 3) lecture at the University of
\nMississippi.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nAn International Women’s Day event, the lecture “Don
\nQuixote and the Construction of the Imperial Subject” is
\nfree and open to the public. It is set for 6 p.m. in
\nBondurant Hall Auditorium.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Don Quixote’ is a popular book across the globe, because
\nof its comedy,” said Diane Marting, UM associate professor
\nof Spanish. “This should be a fun, entertaining lecture.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nPublished in two volumes a decade apart, “Don Quixote” is
\nregarded as one of the most influential works of literature
\nto emerge from the Spanish Golden Age. A founding work of
\nmodern Western literature, the book is also considered as
\none of the best-selling non-religious, non-political works
\nof fiction of all time.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Remembered across the globe, International Women’s Day
\noffers a unique celebration of diversity,” Marting said.
\n“This event is a special way of celebrating it, by
\nexamining the historical differences between masculinity
\nand femininity in this beloved novel and its background.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe lecture is sponsored by UM’s departments of English,
\nhistory and modern languages, the Sally McDonnell Barksdale
\nHonors College, Croft Institute for International Studies,
\nSarah Isom Center for Women and Office of International
\nPrograms.
