\nOXFORD, Miss. – The Lafayette-Oxford-University Symphony
\nOrchestra performs a concert Wednesday (March 5) at the
\nGertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nTickets for the 8 p.m. program are $10 for general
\nadmission and $6 for UM students with proper ID. Tickets
\nare available by visiting the UM Box Office in the Student
\nUnion or by calling 662-915-7411.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe orchestra is slated to perform music by Beethoven,
\nRichard Strauss and Emmanuel Chabrier. Featured musicians
\nare UM faculty soloists Michael Rowlett on clarinet and
\nWade Irvin on bassoon, said orchestra director Ronald
\nVernon, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and
\nprofessor of music.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe program opens with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No.
\n1 in C major.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Although it pays homage to Beethoven’s predecessors,
\nespecially Haydn, it also shows the young Beethoven as a
\nunique creative force, especially in his use of dramatic
\nsurprises and the prominence he gives to the members of the
\nwind section,” Vernon said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAfter intermission, Rowlett and Irvin join the strings of
\nthe orchestra for “The Duet-Concertino,” one of Richard
\nStrauss’ last works. The program concludes with “Espana,” a
\nwork in Spanish style by the French composer Emmanuel
\nChabrier.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIrvin, professor of music, has performed extensively in the
\nregion, including feature performances with the Tupelo
\nSymphony Orchestra, where he is principal bassoonist, and
\nUM’s Wind Ensemble, which has aired on Public Radio in
\nMississippi. He has been a regular member of the Memphis,
\nMississippi, Meridian, and Tuscaloosa (Ala.) symphony
\norchestras.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nRowlett was a semi-finalist in the International Clarinet
\nAssociation’s 1998 Young Artist Competition, and he has
\nappeared as a concerto soloist with the University of North
\nCarolina and Durham, N.C., symphony orchestras. He has
\nperformed with the Memphis, Arkansas, North Carolina, and
\nTallahassee symphony orchestras and as a chamber musician
\nwith the Carolina Wind Quintet, Mallarme Chamber Players
\nand the Quodlibet Wind Quintet.
