At the University of Mississippi, faculty and<br \/>\nstaff are encouraged to go the extra mile to assist<br \/>\nstudents.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>In turn, Ole Miss students have an opportunity each year to<br \/>\nreward those faculty and staff who go beyond the norm to<br \/>\nlend a hand by nominating them for the Thomas Frist Student<br \/>\nService Award.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Students, alumni, friends, faculty and staff have until<br \/>\nApril 11 to submit nominations for the 14th annual awards.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The Frist Awards recognize one faculty member and one staff<br \/>\nmember for unwavering dedication to students and provide a<br \/>\n$1,000 prize and a plaque. Any full-time faculty or staff<br \/>\nmember, except previous Frist Award recipients, is<br \/>\neligible.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;We have many employees on our campus who fit the criteria<br \/>\nfor the Frist Award,&#8221; said Chancellor Robert Khayat. &#8220;This<br \/>\nis a caring, nurturing community, where special efforts are<br \/>\nmade to support and assist our students. Many faculty and<br \/>\nstaff go beyond the norm with acts of kindness that often<br \/>\nbecome pivotal in helping a young person determine place<br \/>\nand purpose in life.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Written, signed and submitted by individuals, the<br \/>\nnomination narratives should differentiate between<br \/>\nobligation and service by citing specific examples where an<br \/>\nOle Miss member has gone beyond what is expected of them to<br \/>\nhelp a student or group of students.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Past nominations pointing to such acts of kindness have<br \/>\nread in part as follows:<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<li>When my grandmother died, she and her husband drove me<br \/>\nhome and spent some time with my family.<\/li>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<li>When I didn&#8217;t have the money to pay for my textbook,<br \/>\nshe covered the cost and allowed me to pay her back as soon<br \/>\nas my financial aid hit. She had never met me before that<br \/>\nday. .<\/li>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<li>He took a group of students to visit a company and meet<br \/>\nwith the top executives and see the inner workings of the<br \/>\ncompany. .<\/li>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<li>Some students needed a specific class to be able to<br \/>\ngraduate on time and he found a way to get it offered over<br \/>\nthe summer. .<\/li>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<li>Even though she was not our adviser, she was more than<br \/>\nwilling to stay after hours and discuss questions dealing<br \/>\nwith scheduling classes, completing portfolios, field<br \/>\nexperiences and other issues. .<\/li>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<li>He organized a reading group that met outside of class;<br \/>\nit was basically an extra class period each week two hours<br \/>\nlong and so helpful. .<\/li>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<li>When our course covered some Eastern philosophy and<br \/>\nstudents expressed a desire to learn more about yoga, she<br \/>\nbegan offering yoga classes for any interested students one<br \/>\nnight a week. .<\/li>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<li>I got into trouble and a number of people offered to<br \/>\nhelp but he stood by me throughout my adversity. .<\/li>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Frist Award nomination forms are available at key campus<br \/>\nlocations, including the Chancellor&#8217;s Office, Dean of<br \/>\nStudents and J.D. Williams Library. Letters of nomination<br \/>\nalso will be accepted. The mailing address is Office of the<br \/>\nChancellor, Frist Award, 123 Lyceum, University, MS 38677.<br \/>\nIn addition, nomination forms are available on the Internet<br \/>\nat http\/\/www.olemiss.edu\/news\/frist.html and can be<br \/>\ne-mailed to frist@olemiss.edu.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>All nominees are notified that they have been so honored,<br \/>\nand a campus committee appointed by the chancellor chooses<br \/>\nthe two recipients.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The Frist Student Service Awards were established with a<br \/>\n$50,000 gift from the late Dr. Thomas F. Frist of<br \/>\nNashville, a 1930 UM graduate.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;The generosity of this outstanding graduate has given us<br \/>\nthis opportunity to recognize dedicated service to students<br \/>\non our campus,&#8221; Khayat said. &#8220;The cornerstone of Dr.<br \/>\nFrist&#8217;s enormous success was his emphasis on service,<br \/>\nwhether as a physician, as a company CEO or as a volunteer<br \/>\nin so many worthwhile projects. It is truly an appropriate<br \/>\ngift, which exemplifies his remarkable life.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Past recipients of the Frist Award include faculty members<br \/>\nDonald Cole, John Juergens, Pamela Lawhead, James O&#8217;Neal,<br \/>\nTerry Panhorst, William Staton, Ken Sufka, Patricia<br \/>\nTreloar, David Willson and John Winkle, and staff members<br \/>\nSue Hodge, Max Miller, Ginger Patterson, Melinda Pullen,<br \/>\nThomas J.
