\nOXFORD, Miss. – College students often face difficult
\ncircumstances without family or friends nearby to step in
\nand help. At the University of Mississippi, faculty and
\nstaff are encouraged to go the extra mile to assist
\nstudents.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\nIn turn, Ole Miss students have an opportunity each year to
\nreward those faculty and staff who go beyond the norm to
\nlend a hand by nominating them for the Thomas Frist Student
\nService Award.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nStudents, alumni, friends, faculty and staff have until
\nApril 11 to submit nominations for the 14th annual awards.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Frist Awards recognize one faculty member and one staff
\nmember for unwavering dedication to students and provide a
\n$1,000 prize and a plaque. Any full-time faculty or staff
\nmember, except previous Frist Award recipients, is
\neligible.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We have many employees on our campus who fit the criteria
\nfor the Frist Award,” said Chancellor Robert Khayat. “This
\nis a caring, nurturing community, where special efforts are
\nmade to support and assist our students. Many faculty and
\nstaff go beyond the norm with acts of kindness that often
\nbecome pivotal in helping a young person determine place
\nand purpose in life.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWritten, signed and submitted by individuals, the
\nnomination narratives should differentiate between
\nobligation and service by citing specific examples where an
\nOle Miss member has gone beyond what is expected of them to
\nhelp a student or group of students.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPast nominations pointing to such acts of kindness have
\nread in part as follows:
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

  • When my grandmother died, she and her husband drove me
    \nhome and spent some time with my family.<\/li>\n

    <\/span><\/p>\n

    \n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

  • When I didn’t have the money to pay for my textbook,
    \nshe covered the cost and allowed me to pay her back as soon
    \nas my financial aid hit. She had never met me before that
    \nday. .<\/li>\n

    <\/span><\/p>\n

    \n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

  • He took a group of students to visit a company and meet
    \nwith the top executives and see the inner workings of the
    \ncompany. .<\/li>\n

    <\/span><\/p>\n

    \n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

  • Some students needed a specific class to be able to
    \ngraduate on time and he found a way to get it offered over
    \nthe summer. .<\/li>\n

    <\/span><\/p>\n

    \n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

  • Even though she was not our adviser, she was more than
    \nwilling to stay after hours and discuss questions dealing
    \nwith scheduling classes, completing portfolios, field
    \nexperiences and other issues. .<\/li>\n

    \n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

  • He organized a reading group that met outside of class;
    \nit was basically an extra class period each week two hours
    \nlong and so helpful. .<\/li>\n

    <\/span><\/p>\n

    \n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

  • When our course covered some Eastern philosophy and
    \nstudents expressed a desire to learn more about yoga, she
    \nbegan offering yoga classes for any interested students one
    \nnight a week. .<\/li>\n

    \n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

    <\/p>\n

  • I got into trouble and a number of people offered to
    \nhelp but he stood by me throughout my adversity. .<\/li>\n

    <\/span><\/p>\n

    \nFrist Award nomination forms are available at key campus
    \nlocations, including the Chancellor’s Office, Dean of
    \nStudents and J.D. Williams Library. Letters of nomination
    \nalso will be accepted. The mailing address is Office of the

    \nIn addition, nomination forms are available on the Internet

    \n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

    \nAll nominees are notified that they have been so honored,
    \nand a campus committee appointed by the chancellor chooses
    \nthe two recipients.
    \n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

    \nThe Frist Student Service Awards were established with a
    \n$50,000 gift from the late Dr. Thomas F. Frist of
    \nNashville, a 1930 UM graduate.
    \n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

    \n“The generosity of this outstanding graduate has given us
    \nthis opportunity to recognize dedicated service to students
    \non our campus,” Khayat said. “The cornerstone of Dr.
    \nFrist’s enormous success was his emphasis on service,
    \nwhether as a physician, as a company CEO or as a volunteer
    \nin so many worthwhile projects. It is truly an appropriate
    \ngift, which exemplifies his remarkable life.”
    \n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

    \nPast recipients of the Frist Award include faculty members
    \nDonald Cole, John Juergens, Pamela Lawhead, James O’Neal,
    \nTerry Panhorst, William Staton, Ken Sufka, Patricia
    \nTreloar, David Willson and John Winkle, and staff members
    \nSue Hodge, Max Miller, Ginger Patterson, Melinda Pullen,
    \nThomas J. Reardon and Linda Spargo.
