\nOXFORD, Miss. – For the fourth straight year, a University
\nof Mississippi alumnus in English is to be featured in a
\nshort story anthology series that lauds the latest crop of
\npromising new writers from around the country.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nJacob Rubin of New York City is slated to have his story
\n“Little Stones, Little Pistols, Little Clash” included in
\n“Best New American Voices 2009,” which is to be released in
\nlate October. This is Rubin’s first published work of
\nfiction, although he has written essays for Slate, New York
\nand the New Republic online.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I felt like I’d just won an Oscar,” said Rubin, who
\ncompleted his Master of Fine Arts in creative writing at UM
\nlast summer. “It was especially exciting since close
\nfriends of mine from Ole Miss had been included in years
\npast.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSince fall 2000, the UM program – the only such degree
\noffering in the state – has capitalized on Oxford’s aura
\nand on the university’s Southern writer-in-residence
\nposition. Funded by best-selling author John Grisham and
\nhis wife, Renee, the post brings extraordinary writers to
\nthe Oxford campus to interact with students.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPatrick Quinn, English department chair, attributed Rubin’s
\nsuccess to his own hard work and diligence aided by a
\ndedicated faculty.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Once again, the fertile ground of creative pursuit on the
\ncampus has proven fruitful,” Quinn said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOne professor noted that, during Rubin’s tenure as a
\nstudent, his exceptional talent caused other good writers
\nwithin the program to look up to him.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Jake is an extremely fine writer whose writing can be
\nfunny and poignant at the same time, which is not an easy
\naccomplishment,” said David Galef, professor of English and
\nformer administrator of the academic program. “I think we
\nare a top-notch program. Jake just gives us something more
\nto boast about.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn Rubin’s fiction story, musicians in a rock band use
\nmagical words to hypnotize their audience. Principal
\ncharacters are the band members and the wicked men who coin
\nthese spellbinding words.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA graduate of Harvard College, Rubin said he came to Ole
\nMiss because he loved award-winning author Barry Hannah’s
\nwriting. Hannah, longtime writer-in-residence at UM, was an
\noriginal faculty member of the MFA in creative writing
\nprogram and remains its director.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Barry Hannah is, without exaggeration, an American
\ntreasure,” Rubin said. “I’ve certainly been inspired by him
\n– so inspired, in fact, that I am currently making a
\ndocumentary about him with filmmaker Nick Louvel.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nRubin pointed to others on the UM English faculty for
\ncontributing to his success, including Galef and
\nWriter-in-Residence Tom Franklin, as well as visiting
\nwriters such as Brad Watson and Michael Knight.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“You often hear horror stories about ultra-competitive
\nwriting programs, but Ole Miss is just the opposite,” Rubin
\nsaid. “The faculty and fellow students could not be more
\nsupportive or companionable.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSince completing his MFA, Rubin has returned to his native
\ncity and is freelance writing. He is also finishing a
\nnovel, “Giovanni the Impersonator,” and working on the
\naforementioned documentary.
