{"id":547,"date":"2008-03-18T10:11:29","date_gmt":"2008-03-18T15:11:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=547"},"modified":"2014-09-23T09:24:41","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T14:24:41","slug":"dozens-of-scientists-pulled-to-oxford-for-gulf-coast-gravity-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/dozens-of-scientists-pulled-to-oxford-for-gulf-coast-gravity-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Dozens of Scientists Pulled To Oxford for Gulf Coast Gravity Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"border: 1px solid #000000; margin: 5px; width: 300px; float: left; background-color: #ffffff\" class=\"jce?caption\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/wp-content\/uploads\/stories\/apple.jpg\" alt=\"apple.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0pt; float: left; width: 300px; height: 303px\" title=\"apple.jpg\" height=\"303\" width=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"color: #000000; text-align: center; clear: both\" class=\"jce?caption?text\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8212; Dozens of researchers and students will<br \/>\ngravitate to the University of Mississippi this weekend for<br \/>\nthe Fourth Annual Gulf Coast Gravity Meeting, which begins<br \/>\nFriday (March 7) in the Ole Miss Student Union.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Sponsored by the American Physical Society and the UM<br \/>\nDepartment of Physics and Astronomy, the regional<br \/>\ngatherings provide physicists a chance to come together and<br \/>\nshare their research on gravity and gravitational fields.<br \/>\nAbout 40 researchers have registered, and about 25 speakers<br \/>\nare to address a variety of topics, including classic<br \/>\ngravity, cosmology and gravitational waves, said event<br \/>\ncoordinator Marco Cavaglia.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Our colleagues from throughout the South get to meet and<br \/>\npresent short talks,&#8221; said Cavaglia, UM assistant professor<br \/>\nof physics and astronomy. &#8220;It&#8217;s also a good venue for<br \/>\nstudents to present their work if they&#8217;re going to graduate<br \/>\nor looking for work.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The meeting opens at 1 p.m. Friday afternoon, and concludes<br \/>\nSaturday afternoon. The event is free to the public.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Besides scientists from Texas, Florida and everywhere in<br \/>\nbetween, this year&#8217;s meeting also features presenters from<br \/>\nJapan, Mexico, Romania and Ukraine, Cavaglia said. UM will<br \/>\nbe well represented as well, including &#8220;Dynamics of Causal<br \/>\nSets,&#8221; a presentation by Luca Bombelli, associate professor<br \/>\nof physics and astronomy. Bombelli worked on the research<br \/>\nwith a small group of students, exploring one approach to<br \/>\nquantum gravity.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Meetings like these are important because it keeps us up<br \/>\nto date on what others are doing,&#8221; Bombelli said. &#8220;In these<br \/>\nsmaller meetings, it&#8217;s easier to follow all the talks, and<br \/>\nwe get to interact more with the people who come. It&#8217;s not<br \/>\nas overwhelming as a national conference.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Students also can compete for the Blue Apple Award, which<br \/>\nwill be awarded to the student judged to have the best<br \/>\npresentation. The winner receives $200 from APS and a<br \/>\nunique trophy &#8211; an apple made from blue glass.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;It&#8217;s an apple because of Sir Isaac Newton,&#8221; Cavaglia said<br \/>\nwith a laugh. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know why it&#8217;s blue.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>This marks the first time the conference is being held in<br \/>\nMississippi. Previous meetings have been held in<br \/>\nBrownsville, Texas, Boca Raton, Fla., and Huntsville, Ala.,<br \/>\nand have featured scholars from UM, Florida Atlantic<br \/>\nUniversity, Indiana University, University of Florida and<br \/>\nthe University of Texas-Brownsville.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;The fact that we have conferences like these and advertise<br \/>\nthem in national and international newsletters makes our<br \/>\nprogram here at UM that much more visible,&#8221; Bombelli said.<br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s good for the department and good for the university.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>For more information, visit<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phy.olemiss.edu\/\"><br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.phy.olemiss.edu<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>or email gcgm4@olemiss.edu.
