\nOXFORD, Miss. With 60,000-plus spirited fans packed into
\nthe University of Mississippi’s Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on
\ngame day, there’s always the possibility of an emergency
\nsituation.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nIndeed, following the events of Sept. 11, 2001, the U.S.
\nDepartment of Homeland Security identified professional and
\ncollegiate stadiums and arenas as potential targets for
\nterrorist activities. But Mississippi has become the first
\nstate in the nation to take proactive measures to ensure
\ncollege sporting venues are prepared for an emergency.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAt a ceremony Tuesday, Ole Miss was awarded its Sports
\nEvent Security Aware Seal of Approval from the Mississippi
\nHomeland Security Office. The award designates that UM has
\nmet the requirements for effective security and safety
\nmanagement systems related to preparation, response and
\nrecovery at spectator sports events.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The safety of both our fans and participants at our
\nathletics events is always the most important aspect in
\nplanning those events at Ole Miss,” said Athletics Director
\nPete Boone. “We are pleased to have been a part of this
\nnational pilot program, and receiving this Seal of Approval
\nfrom the Mississippi Homeland Security Office is
\nsignificant to help reinforce our efforts. However, while
\nthis recognition is certainly important, we will continue
\nto explore avenues to better prepare us to continue
\nproviding a safe environment at our events.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nUM joins at least six other higher education institutions
\nin the state that either have completed or are nearing
\ncompletion on a four-year risk management project. Training
\nwas provided to UM’s incident command team, which includes
\nathletics representatives, campus police, emergency
\nmanagement and medical personnel, as well as fire and
\nhazardous material officials.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe SESA training included sports security awareness,
\nsports security policies and procedures, emergency response
\nwith evacuation, recovery operations, natural disasters and
\ncrowd management. The training better prepares universities
\nto handle any and all types of emergencies at stadiums and
\narenas, said Bryon Thompson, assistant director of the
\nMississippi Homeland Security Office.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It’s a lot more than being ready in case of a terrorist
\nattack,” Thompson said. “We’re talking about a fire,
\nviolence in the stands, flooding from a sprinkler system
\nany type of incident. We want officials to be prepared to
\nbe ready to handle an emergency.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nEstablished in 2006, the Center for Spectator Sports
\nSecurity Management at the University of Southern
\nMississippi set out to improve sporting events security at
\nthe state’s college stadiums.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“No other state in the country has done this,” said Lou
\nMarciani, CSSSM director. “Mississippi took the leadership
\nrole and set the standard for all of America. ”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWith the center’s assistance, UM officials were supplied
\nwith a customized computer simulation training tool that
\nensured an experience much like a real-life emergency
\nstadium evacuation. The training tool was tailored with 3-D
\nmodels of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It’s a virtual tool that helps us determine proper
\nevacuation routes as well as the amount of time it would
\ntake to move everyone to safety,” said Allen Drewrey, UM
\nevent management coordinator.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThrough a $3.5 million Homeland Security grant, plans are
\nset to roll out the SESA risk management training
\nnationally to all Division I, II and III universities and
\ncolleges beginning in March 2009, Marciani said.
