\"COMMON_READING\"<\/a>OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 The University of Mississippi’s Common Reading Experience <\/a>selection group has narrowed its list to five books, with one to be selected for campuswide reading and discussion in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n

All incoming freshmen and transfer students will get copies of the selected book, which will be announced in February, with instructions to read it before the fall semester begins. The text will be used during classes for discussion, and faculty and staff are also encouraged to read the book in an effort to enrich the sense of community.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Our short list is especially strong this year and includes five excellent books,” Leslie Banahan, assistant vice chancellor for student affairs and committee co-chair, said. “Any of the books would be a great Common Reading selection for 2016.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Faculty, staff and students, as well as alumni and residents of the greater Oxford community were invited to nominate a suggested title this fall. The committee chose from books that were ideally less than 400 pages, available in paperback, written by a living author and published within the last five years, all to ensure the book is accessible to both students and readers in the community.<\/span><\/p>\n

The committee has been meeting\u00a0weekly since mid-October and will do so through January<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to discuss the recommendations. Recently, they settled on five books and the committee members will read all of them before making their choice in January.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“We will come together in late January to discuss each book and rank our choices,” Banahan said. “In the past, these discussions have been lively, even passionate, as members express their preferences for the Common Reading selection. It is academic discourse at its best.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Kirk A. Johnson,\u00a0associate professor of sociology and African-American studies and co-chair of the Common Reading Experience selection subcommittee, is impressed with the list.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s hard to imagine a more eclectic range of books, both in format and theme,” Johnson said. “Each title has different strengths, but the common denominator is broad appeal within the university community and especially for our target audience of next year’s entering class.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The finalists for the Common Reading Experience are:<\/span><\/p>\n

– “Ten Little Indians” by Sherman Alexie. The book is described by Amazon.com as “poignant and emotionally resonant” tales of Native Americans who find themselves at both cultural and personal crossroads.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption”\u00a0by Bryan Stevenson. Stevenson founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending the poor, the wrongly condemned and others. The book tells his story about the redemptive power of mercy and serves as Stevenson’s call to fix the justice system.<\/span><\/p>\n

– “How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America”\u00a0by Kiese Laymon. The collection of Laymon’s essays covers subjects such as\u00a0family, race, violence and fame and also music, writing and coming of age in Mississippi. The essays also spotlight the lesser noticed parts of contemporary American life.<\/span><\/p>\n

– “Whistling Vivaldi: And Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do”\u00a0by Claude M. Steele. The\u00a0social psychologist offers his groundbreaking research and conclusions on both stereotypes and identity. The work covers a range of issues from test score racial and gender gaps to the belief that black men have superior athletic prowess. Steele also lays out a plan to mitigate these stereotypes and reshape American identities.<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0“Little Princes: One Man’s Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal”\u00a0by Conor Grennan. The author tells his story of becoming involved in the battle against child trafficking and trying to reunite the victims with their parents in a country caught up in civil war.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This will be the sixth Common Reading Experience at UM. The 2015 Common Reading Experience selection is “The Education of a Lifetime,” a memoir by Robert Khayat, UM chancellor emeritus. <\/span><\/p>\n

Previous selections are “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” by Rebecca Skloot (2011), “Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter,” by UM associate professor Tom Franklin (2012), “The Unforgiving Minute: A Soldier’s Education” by Craig Mullaney (2013) and “The Girls of Atomic City” by Denise Kiernan (2014).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
