\nOXFORD, Miss. – A woman recognized in the nation’s capital
\nfor her tireless leadership supporting political,
\neducational and charitable fundraising is being honored
\nwith a University of Mississippi scholarship endowment and
\nis joining the efforts of the Ole Miss Women’s Council for
\nPhilanthropy.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe first Women’s Council Scholarship designated solely for
\nstudents majoring in public policy leadership in the
\nuniversity’s Trent Lott Leadership Institute is created to
\nhonor Martha Dale Fritts of Washington, D.C. Her husband,
\nEddie Fritts – former president and chief executive officer
\nof the National Association of Broadcasters – and the
\ncouple’s three children are establishing the endowment with
\na $105,000 gift.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMartha Dale Fritts also is accepting a seat on the Ole Miss
\nWomen’s Council, which has attracted more than $9 million
\nin private gifts for scholarships since its inception in
\n2000 and provides valuable mentorship and leadership
\ntraining for recipients.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Martha Dale is really a teacher at heart, as she has been
\nmentoring all her adult life,” Eddie Fritts said. “She has
\nbeen the centerpiece of our family and deserves special
\nrecognition. I am so grateful she is willing to share
\nadditional time mentoring young people.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Fritts endowment is a welcome addition to the growing
\nlist of Women’s Council scholarships, said Jan Farrington,
\nchair of the Women’s Council.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This scholarship is a wonderful example not only of this
\nfamily’s generosity and support of Ole Miss but also of its
\ndesire to honor a very special woman,” Farrington said. “In
\naddition to being honored by her family, the OMWC is happy
\nto welcome Martha Dale as our newest member. Her experience
\nin philanthropic endeavors will be invaluable to the
\ncouncil, and we look forward to her active participation in
\nour program.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMartha Dale Fritts served 12 years on the board of the Wolf
\nTrap Foundation, which oversees the nation’s only national
\npark for the performing arts, and she has been involved in
\nthe Meridian House Foundation, which assists newly posted
\ndiplomatic families in Washington. She helped host UM galas
\nin Washington that honored the now late U.S. Rep. Jamie
\nWhitten, as well as U.S. senators Thad Cochran and Trent
\nLott, and attracted funds for UM initiatives. She is a
\nboard member for both the University Foundation and the
\nGertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhile her husband was in the top leadership post of the
\nNAB, she hosted spouses of board members, who represented
\nevery geographical region of the country, and engaged them
\nin educational and cultural opportunities of the Washington
\narea. Additionally, Fritts has given of her time to the
\nCancer Research Foundation and the Arlington Hospital
\nFoundation.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The endowment of a scholarship in my name is a high honor,
\nas I am aware of the financial pressure on young students
\nthese days,” Fritts said. “I look forward to mentoring
\nrecipients on our numerous trips to our second home in
\nOxford. Because of our involvement in the national
\npolitical process, we chose to designate public policy as
\nthe major of recipients. Eddie and I plan to bring
\nrecipients to Washington as our guests to see firsthand how
\npublic policy is developed and implemented.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMartha Dale and Eddie Fritts began their life journey
\ntogether as high school sweethearts in Union City, Tenn.
\nAfter graduation, she enrolled at the University of
\nTennessee at Martin, while he enrolled at Ole Miss. While
\nat UT-Martin, she became a founding member of the campus
\nchapter of the Chi Omega sorority and serves as a national
\ntrustee on the Chi Omega Advisory Board.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAfter college, the two married and moved to Indianola,
\nwhere they owned and operated radio stations in
\nMississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana for more than two
\ndecades. During this time, the Fritts family visited Ole
\nMiss frequently with their children, who all attended or
\ngraduated from the university.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTheir move to Washington came in 1982, when Eddie Fritts
\nled the NAB for 23 years. A member of the Ole Miss Alumni
\nHall of Fame, he heads the political affairs firm he
\nfounded and represents many of the nation’s most prominent
\ntelecommunications firms.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Fritts family includes three adult children: Kimberley
\nFritts Turner of Washington, Jennifer Fritts Darcey of
\nMcLean, Va., and Tim Fritts of Madison. Their grandchildren
\nare Margaret Turner, Katherine and Will Fritts, and Grace
\nand Lily Darcey.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe gift is part of the university’s MomentUM campaign, a
\nfour-year initiative to raise $200 million. The campaign,
\nwhich ends in December 2008, already has raised more than
\n$180 million for scholarships, graduate fellowships,
\nfaculty support, a basketball practice facility,
\nresidential colleges and a new law school on the Oxford
\ncampus. Also in the plans is a cancer center at the UM
\nMedical Center in Jackson.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
