{"id":551,"date":"2008-03-18T10:18:00","date_gmt":"2008-03-18T15:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=551"},"modified":"2014-09-23T09:24:40","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T14:24:40","slug":"former-nab-head-eddie-fritts-honors-wife-with-womens-council-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/former-nab-head-eddie-fritts-honors-wife-with-womens-council-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"Former NAB Head Eddie Fritts Honors Wife with Women&#8217;s Council Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; A woman recognized in the nation&#8217;s capital<br \/>\nfor her tireless leadership supporting political,<br \/>\neducational and charitable fundraising is being honored<br \/>\nwith a University of Mississippi scholarship endowment and<br \/>\nis joining the efforts of the Ole Miss Women&#8217;s Council for<br \/>\nPhilanthropy.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The first Women&#8217;s Council Scholarship designated solely for<br \/>\nstudents majoring in public policy leadership in the<br \/>\nuniversity&#8217;s Trent Lott Leadership Institute is created to<br \/>\nhonor Martha Dale Fritts of Washington, D.C. Her husband,<br \/>\nEddie Fritts &#8211; former president and chief executive officer<br \/>\nof the National Association of Broadcasters &#8211; and the<br \/>\ncouple&#8217;s three children are establishing the endowment with<br \/>\na $105,000 gift.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Martha Dale Fritts also is accepting a seat on the Ole Miss<br \/>\nWomen&#8217;s Council, which has attracted more than $9 million<br \/>\nin private gifts for scholarships since its inception in<br \/>\n2000 and provides valuable mentorship and leadership<br \/>\ntraining for recipients.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Martha Dale is really a teacher at heart, as she has been<br \/>\nmentoring all her adult life,&#8221; Eddie Fritts said. &#8220;She has<br \/>\nbeen the centerpiece of our family and deserves special<br \/>\nrecognition. I am so grateful she is willing to share<br \/>\nadditional time mentoring young people.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The Fritts endowment is a welcome addition to the growing<br \/>\nlist of Women&#8217;s Council scholarships, said Jan Farrington,<br \/>\nchair of the Women&#8217;s Council.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;This scholarship is a wonderful example not only of this<br \/>\nfamily&#8217;s generosity and support of Ole Miss but also of its<br \/>\ndesire to honor a very special woman,&#8221; Farrington said. &#8220;In<br \/>\naddition to being honored by her family, the OMWC is happy<br \/>\nto welcome Martha Dale as our newest member. Her experience<br \/>\nin philanthropic endeavors will be invaluable to the<br \/>\ncouncil, and we look forward to her active participation in<br \/>\nour program.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Martha Dale Fritts served 12 years on the board of the Wolf<br \/>\nTrap Foundation, which oversees the nation&#8217;s only national<br \/>\npark for the performing arts, and she has been involved in<br \/>\nthe Meridian House Foundation, which assists newly posted<br \/>\ndiplomatic families in Washington. She helped host UM galas<br \/>\nin Washington that honored the now late U.S. Rep. Jamie<br \/>\nWhitten, as well as U.S. senators Thad Cochran and Trent<br \/>\nLott, and attracted funds for UM initiatives. She is a<br \/>\nboard member for both the University Foundation and the<br \/>\nGertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>While her husband was in the top leadership post of the<br \/>\nNAB, she hosted spouses of board members, who represented<br \/>\nevery geographical region of the country, and engaged them<br \/>\nin educational and cultural opportunities of the Washington<br \/>\narea. Additionally, Fritts has given of her time to the<br \/>\nCancer Research Foundation and the Arlington Hospital<br \/>\nFoundation.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;The endowment of a scholarship in my name is a high honor,<br \/>\nas I am aware of the financial pressure on young students<br \/>\nthese days,&#8221; Fritts said. &#8220;I look forward to mentoring<br \/>\nrecipients on our numerous trips to our second home in<br \/>\nOxford. Because of our involvement in the national<br \/>\npolitical process, we chose to designate public policy as<br \/>\nthe major of recipients. Eddie and I plan to bring<br \/>\nrecipients to Washington as our guests to see firsthand how<br \/>\npublic policy is developed and implemented.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Martha Dale and Eddie Fritts began their life journey<br \/>\ntogether as high school sweethearts in Union City, Tenn.<br \/>\nAfter graduation, she enrolled at the University of<br \/>\nTennessee at Martin, while he enrolled at Ole Miss. While<br \/>\nat UT-Martin, she became a founding member of the campus<br \/>\nchapter of the Chi Omega sorority and serves as a national<br \/>\ntrustee on the Chi Omega Advisory Board.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>After college, the two married and moved to Indianola,<br \/>\nwhere they owned and operated radio stations in<br \/>\nMississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana for more than two<br \/>\ndecades. During this time, the Fritts family visited Ole<br \/>\nMiss frequently with their children, who all attended or<br \/>\ngraduated from the university.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Their move to Washington came in 1982, when Eddie Fritts<br \/>\nled the NAB for 23 years. A member of the Ole Miss Alumni<br \/>\nHall of Fame, he heads the political affairs firm he<br \/>\nfounded and represents many of the nation&#8217;s most prominent<br \/>\ntelecommunications firms.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The Fritts family includes three adult children: Kimberley<br \/>\nFritts Turner of Washington, Jennifer Fritts Darcey of<br \/>\nMcLean, Va., and Tim Fritts of Madison. Their grandchildren<br \/>\nare Margaret Turner, Katherine and Will Fritts, and Grace<br \/>\nand Lily Darcey.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The gift is part of the university&#8217;s MomentUM campaign, a<br \/>\nfour-year initiative to raise $200 million. The campaign,<br \/>\nwhich ends in December 2008, already has raised more than<br \/>\n$180 million for scholarships, graduate fellowships,<br \/>\nfaculty support, a basketball practice facility,<br \/>\nresidential colleges and a new law school on the Oxford<br \/>\ncampus.
