OXFORD, Miss. – As apex predators – or predators at the top
\nof their food chain – sharks are considered essential in a
\nsustainable ocean ecosystem.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nWith this in mind, a University of Mississippi doctoral
\nstudent has completed biological research related to sharks
\nand marine management, which has received national
\nrecognition.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nJill Hendon of Mounds View, Minn., was recently presented
\nwith the 2008 Walter B. Jones Memorial Award for Excellence
\nin Coastal and Marine Graduate Study. She was recognized
\nfor her research on the stress physiology of sharks at the
\nawards ceremony last month hosted by the National Oceanic
\nand Atmospheric Administration in Washington, D.C.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nAccording to an award letter from NOAA official David
\nKennedy, a distinguished panel of judges selected Hendon
\nfrom an impressive field of nominees. He said her
\ndedication and hard work epitomize coastal stewardship.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHendon’s graduate study research to protect and preserve
\ncoastal areas has focused on marine animal health at the
\nphysiologic level by analyzing blood samples. The work
\ncould lead to better marine management practices, she
\nsaid.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“By examining the stress health of several sharks in a
\npopulation, inferences could be made about the overall
\nhealth of the population,” Hendon said. “Because sharks are
\napex predators in our oceans, their presence is essential
\nfor achieving and maintaining a sustainable ocean
\necosystem.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHendon’s passion was developed as an undergraduate at the
\nUniversity of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Through an affiliation
\nwith the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast
\nResearch Lab, Hendon spent a summer there taking
\nmarine-related field classes. The work led to a master’s
\nprogram in marine immunology at USM and her involvement as
\na volunteer scientist with the NOAA’s long line shark
\nsurvey. While there, she met UM marine biologist Glenn
\nParsons, who encouraged her to pursue her current
\nresearch.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“This award could not have been given to a more deserving
\nindividual,” said Parsons, Hendon’s academic adviser. “Jill
\nis a great student and one of the most genuine people I
\nknow. I am certain that she will continue to make
\nsignificant contributions to the study of stress physiology
\nand marine science, and she will be an exceptional member
\nof the academic community.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHendon expects to complete her doctoral degree in 2009. She
\nhopes to continue pursuing research focused on the
\neco-physiologic approach to coastal management practices.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I enjoy teaching and would love to continue educating
\nstudents and the community about the amazing facets of our
\ncoastal ecosystem,” she said.
