\nOXFORD, Miss. – Natural disaster preparation and policy
\nplanning for coastal communities are to be the focus of a
\nconference March 25-26 at the University of Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe Sea Grant Law and Policy Journal Inaugural Symposium at
\nthe Ole Miss-Oxford Depot is open to the public for a $35
\nfee. It is hosted by the National Sea Grant Law Center,
\nlocated on the Oxford campus.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The focus is to look at some of the legal issues that
\ncostal communities may face with respect to coastal
\nhazards , such as hurricanes, floods, torrential rainfall
\nor any type of natural disaster,” said Stephanie
\nShowalter, director of NSGLC. “The conference will explore
\npossible solutions and policies that may help coastal
\ncommunities respond efficiently in the event of a natural
\ndisaster.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOn-site registration is scheduled 5:30-6 p.m. Tuesday and
\n7:30 – 8 a.m. Wednesday. The fee includes dinner that
\nevening, as well as breakfast, snacks and lunch the
\nfollowing day.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nNational and local speakers plan to discuss topics related
\nto dealing with natural disasters, including innovative
\nchanges that may be made to existing laws and policies to
\nallow communities to adapt more efficiently in response to
\na national disaster, flood insurance, litigation that
\nfollows a natural disaster and whether local governments
\nhave the authority to pass ordinances to address
\ndisaster-related problems such as fertilizer runoff.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nRetired Air Force Lt. Gen. Clark Griffith, chairman of the
\nRevive the Renaissance Commission based in Biloxi,
\ndelivers the symposium’s keynote address Tuesday evening.
\nHe plans to discuss the coastal community’s recovery
\nmethods and progress in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are very excited to hear what Lt. Gen. Griffith has to
\nsay about the commission’s recovery methods and their
\neffect on the devastated community,” Showalter said. “We
\nhave a few Mississippi speakers, although we are also
\nevaluating how the rest of the country is looking at these
\nissues. Hopefully, Mississippi can learn from the
\nexperiences of other areas, and those areas can gain
\ninsight from Mississippi’s own experience.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPresentations and papers discussed at the symposium are to
\nbe published in the Sea Grant Law Center’s inaugural issue
\nof its Sea Grant Law and Policy Journal, which is slated
\nto become an annual publication.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I hope this conference is an opportunity for professionals
\nworking in the emerging field of coastal resiliency to
\ncome together and learn about the work being done, network
\nand build on the issues at hand,” Showalter said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe National Sea Grant Law Center was founded at UM in 2002
\nto provide legal research to the Sea Grant community and
\nits constituents. The center conducts research on marine
\nlaws and policies, coordinates ocean and coastal law
\nresearchers and disseminates information to coastal and
\nocean policymakers.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
