\nOXFORD, Miss. – The “Composers at Ole Miss” spring concert
\nis slated for Tuesday (March 18) at the University of
\nMississippi’s Ford Center for the Performing Arts rehearsal
\nhall.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nFeatured composers are guest Kevin Frey, who divides his
\ntime between the Lafayette County town of Taylor and
\nCalifornia, and tenor Christian Feazell, graduate music
\nmajor from Oxford.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe 8 p.m. concert highlighting the original works of UM
\nfaculty, students and alumni, is free and open to the
\npublic. Seating is limited.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThis year’s program also celebrates the achievements of
\ninternationally renowned composer Nancy Van de Vate, the
\nfirst student to earn a master’s degree in music
\ncomposition at Ole Miss, said Burt Levy, program
\ncoordinator.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are continuing our celebration of Nancy’s achievements
\nby presenting two arias from her recent operas,” Levy
\nsaid.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSoprano Nancy Maria Balach and pianist Stacy Rodgers, both
\nmembers of the UM music faculty, will perform an aria from
\nVan de Vate’s “Where the Cross is Made.” Rodgers also is to
\naccompany baritone Bradley Robinson, associate professor of
\nmusic, on an aria from act II of “Hamlet,” an opera that
\nVan de Vate is composing.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFeazell is slated to perform two pieces from his “Blake
\nSong Collection,” and The Mississippians, UM’s principal
\nstudent jazz ensemble, plan to perform Frey’s two pieces
\nwritten for jazz bands.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“‘Please . . .’ is an up tempo piece that will have you
\ntapping your feet and ‘Marty’s into S’now’ is a waltz for
\njazz band,” Levy said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe program ends with The Mississippians performing “23
\nDegrees North-82 Degrees West,” a piece by Bill Russo.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Composers concerts began in 2000 to offer the
\nuniversity community an annual program of new music and to
\nprovide a means for UM composition students to showcase
\ntheir work, Levy said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
