\nOXFORD, Miss. – Athletes may have their all-star teams to
\nshowcase the best in their sport, but in the academic
\nworld, there is also an all-star team for those who are
\nsuperior in the classroom.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nUniversity of Mississippi senior Shad White of Sandersville
\nhas been named to such a team. He is among 60 students
\nnationwide chosen for USA Today’s All-USA College Academic
\nteams.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nEnrolled in Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and a
\nTruman Scholar, White made the competition’s Third Team.
\nSelection criteria include grades, academic rigor,
\nleadership, activities and, most importantly, how students
\nextend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Being named to the Third Team is a stellar
\naccomplishment,” said USA Today’s Education, Religion and
\nBehavior Editor Leslie Miller in a news release. “There
\nwere hundreds of nominees from four-year colleges
\nnationwide, and the judges selected only 20 students each
\nfor the first, second and third teams.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I was excited to be named; I didn’t hold any
\nexpectations,” said White, an economics and political
\nscience major with a 4.0 GPA. “It’s a nice way to cap off
\nyour college experience after working hard for four years.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAccording to the USA Today Web site, the All-USA College
\nAcademic Team honors full-time undergraduates who not only
\nexcel in scholarship but also extend their intellectual
\nabilities beyond the classroom to benefit society.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhite was chosen for the team due in part to his interest
\nin education, specifically his work to put on the “65%
\nSolution” symposium, showcasing a plan to address school
\nfunding disparities in Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn spring 2006, White and other campus leaders developed
\nthe symposium with local leaders and Tim Mooney, national
\nproponent of the 65-percent solution idea, which promotes
\nspending 65 percent of every dollar of education funds on
\nin-classroom instruction. Their efforts attracted local,
\nstate and national attention.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn his application, White wrote, “Although I have dedicated
\nmy energy to shaping public education in many ways, the
\npolicy symposium of my sophomore year stands as a symbol
\nfor the core motivations behind my passion. For me, this
\nendeavor is inspired by more than curiosity. It is inspired
\nby obstacles witnessed firsthand.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFollowing the symposium, White and others presented their
\nfindings at two national conferences, and the proposal
\ngained significant attention in statewide elections. He
\nalso published a paper proposing similar solutions with a
\nnational student policy think-tank.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We started a dialogue and gained notice in the press and
\namong the political elite,” White said. “Before the
\nsymposium, it wasn’t even remotely talked about.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAdditionally, White helped with the campaign to elect State
\nAuditor Stacy Pickering.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“That campaign was important to me because the state
\nauditor calculates attendance for schools, which determines
\nschool district funding,” White said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhite’s awards and honors at Ole Miss include a prestigious
\nTaylor Medal recognizing academic scholarship and
\nmembership in Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi academic
\nhonoraries. Following May graduation, he hopes to work for
\nthe Department of Education.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHe is the son of Charles and Emily White of Sandersville.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhite becomes the second Honors College student to receive
\nthe USA Today honor, following Catherine Carter of Jackson
\nwho made the team in 2006. Carter’s highlighted
\naccomplishment was a children’s book she wrote to address
\nchildhood obesity.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
