\nOXFORD, Miss. – One University of Mississippi student is to
\nget a life-changing opportunity to live and study in Japan
\nfor a full academic year, thanks to a new scholarship
\nfunded by the Japan Student Service Organization, or
\nJASSO.<\/b>
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe $10,000 scholarship for study at Osaka Gakuin
\nUniversity in Osaka, Japan, is for the 2008-2009 academic
\nyear. The program is administered through the UM Study
\nAbroad Office. OGU offers courses in Japanese language,
\nculture, social sciences, political science and business.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe scholarship program is open to all UM students in good
\nstanding with a GPA of at least 2.5, said Blair McElroy,
\nstudy abroad advisor for Asian programs.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTo apply for the Osaka Gakuin University scholarship,
\nstudents must write an essay, provide a reference and
\ncomplete a study abroad application and the OGU scholarship
\napplication. The application deadline is April 3, with
\naward letters mailed by April 30.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“JASSO scholarships are designed for qualified
\ninternational students accepted by Japanese universities
\nunder the student exchange agreement on a short-term basis
\nfrom about three months to one year,” said Mike H. Matsuno,
\ndirector of international programs at OGU. “We are excited
\nto recommend a student from the University of Mississippi
\nas a candidate.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAll academic areas are eligible, and students need not
\nspeak Japanese to qualify, McElroy said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Students get an intensive Japanese language program while
\nthey’re there, and that’s why they don’t necessarily have
\nto have any prior knowledge of Japanese language to qualify
\nfor this program,” she said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nStudents can go for the fall semester or for the full
\nacademic year. The 10-month academic year is broken into
\nthe fall semester, a seven-week interim program and the
\nspring semester. Students take 16 credits per week, with 10
\ncredits of Japanese language and six credits of
\nsubject-based courses taught in English for the fall
\nsemester. The interim program is an intensive language
\nprogram, and all classes in the spring semester are taught
\nin Japanese, McElroy said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nUpon arrival in Japan, the scholarship recipient is to
\nreceive 150,000 yen (about $1,500) and thereafter a monthly
\nstipend of 80,000 yen (about $800) for the duration of the
\nprogram, she said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOGU is a private institution in the heart of Osaka, Japan’s
\nsecond-largest city and the country’s commercial center,
\nwith Mitsubishi, Sanyo and Suntory calling it home. The
\nschool is also UM’s only exchange partner in Japan offering
\na home-stay option, providing students with a complete
\nimmersion in Japanese culture.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Because of the growing relationship between the
\ncommunities in north Mississippi and Japan, now is the
\nperfect time for a Mississippi student to consider studying
\nin Japan,” said Susan Oliphant, director of the UM Study
\nAbroad Office. “Imagine the impact of such study on future
\nemployment.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nUM has exchange agreements with more than 43 universities
\naround the world. Through these agreements UM students can
\nspend a semester or year abroad, and students from
\ninternational universities can come to Ole Miss. Students
\nwho study abroad on an exchange pay UM tuition and fees for
\neach semester they are abroad. They remain enrolled as Ole
\nMiss students and receive UM credit for the courses they
\ntake.
